Thoughts are that the 4a 5G will be the 'XL' model this year. Limiting models, keeping costs down.

Supposedly bigger screen and better cpu (765G, like on oneplus nord), maybe more ram and additional camera model too.
Personally I like the smaller size of the 4a (non 5G) but just feel this is just a tad too expensive for what you get, hell you can get multiple camera lenses on far cheaper phones, £250-300 would have been a better price imo.
Ironically I'm in a bit of a dilemma over it (I'm after a new mobile), one it does fit everything I want in a phone (smaller size, good performance, plastic casing because I hate glass cased phones and all metal seems unpopular these days) but on the other hand I'm just not sure it's worth the cost.

I was hoping 5G capability would be cheaper, especially as the newer SOCs have the 5G modem integrated into them!

Isn't the OnePlus Nord worth a look??
Re: Google launches the Pixel 4a smartphone at £/$349
The price is weird considering the Chinese models
Re: Google launches the Pixel 4a smartphone at £/$349
I've been looking for a replacement for my Mi A1 for a while now and would have ordered the OnePlus Nord if I could when announced, then I saw this a couple of days ago and was pleased I waited. But comparing this to the Nord I think I'm going to go back to the Nord again.
The Nord is a similar size to what I have now so my cars cradle will accommodate it, it has a better CPU, better camera, better battery, the only thing that would make it perfect for me now is Android One. A colleague has still got a OnePlus 3 and has been very pleased with it some I'm less concerned about the OxygenOS than I was previously.
The only thing that would really put a spanner in the works now is if an Mi A4 is announced, but not likely as they have seemed to get worse with each version.

Isn't the OnePlus Nord supposed to have a poor camera?
Its so damn hard chosing a phone now. I crave decent bug free updates and a battery that will last the two years I plan to keep my phone above all else but who do you go for? I went for Nokia last time for the Android one program but after just over a year my wife and I are both experiencing bugs, battery life has started dropping. Do phones just not last past a year now or do I need to spend £500+?

IMO it's too big size wise and in all honesty I'd rather have stock android because you 'should' get updates a bit faster....

From what I've seen the image is fairly similar to the pixel 4a, it's processing seems a little oversaturated imo, although some reviewers are saying the pixel 4a seems a bit darker than it.

I want to get a phone with 5G,so I got a stop-gap Redmi Note 5 for around £100. So far well over a year later, battery life seems fairly solid, although updates are a tad slow. Look for a phone which has at least a 4000mAH to 5000mAH battery.

The problem is you are paying almost £500 for the 4a 5G.

Honestly 5G doesn't bother me... the odds of me having a decent 5G connection before the next decade is out is pretty slim, hell I'm still struggling with 4G and even 3G in some places...
Like I said earlier I do kind of feel the 4a is a tad overpriced, I'd personally have liked to have seen it closer to £250-300 range, but unfortunately Google seems to see their pixel range as 'iPhone' competitors... which lets be honest, even as someone who isn't an Apple fan, would argue isn't the case and their true competitors are companies like samsung, oneplus, motorola, hell even nokia are pretty good value these days.

I just find it weird Google,is again trying to tier features, when Chinese companies are throwing the kitchen sink at all price levels. Unlike Xiaomi,OnePlus actually profits from its phones. Although enjoy it while you can,as I can see more and more Chinese OEMs going out to pasture! ;)

Google seems to think their 'brand' is up there with Apple etc but realistically when you think of 'google', what do you mainly think of...yep search engine (or more accurate data miners, just like facebook etc, for advertisers), I doubt many people even realise that android is built by google (well alphabet really but...)
