Does anyone really think that's a $1399 phone?

It doesn't matter what we think. It only matters what they are able to get away with forcing people to pay.

    $1399 sheesh. Absolutely a design-first phone.

Still, waterproofing a flip phone with all its joints and hinges, that's something I guess.

I can see why people would. It has the novelty aspect and most people who can afford a $1000+ flagship are going to be less fussed about going up to $1399, which might not even be up given how much some of the flagships cost, than someone buying an iPhone SE or Pixel 4a would be about moving up to a flagship.

I bought my s20+ when it came out but if I was making the same choice now this phone at this price point would be towards the top of my options. Maybe not at the top because there are certainly otherwise comparable phones for much less, but considering the progress they've made compared to the last generation I could see the next version being a competitive choice.

Re: Motorola launches the Razr 5G

This has definitely flipped my wife’s nostalgia switch. She was very reluctant to move off the old RAZR and this has gone to the top of her list for her next handset. She doesn’t seem to give a damn about the spec drop compared to similarly priced flagship phones. I can’t complain too much as I am still trying to come up with a justification to get a MIcrosoft Duo.... pot, kettle, black....

    That, exactly.

But then each to his own. I can't really moan about a $1400 phone when I bought a £750 flashgun for my camera. And I shudder at what some people I know spent on bikes. My flashgun expenditure might make a decent down-payment.

Each to his own, I guess.

Re: Motorola launches the Razr 5G

They still haven't figured out the support behind the screen - reviewers show there's no crease in the middle of the screen, but they haven't got the curve of the bit behind the screen right so now you just get two creases about a third in from the screen edge where the screen is bent most as it folds. Maybe they need an actual strain relief to fix it, something like a bit of silicone on the screen back?

It's not waterproof, else they'd be trumpeting an IP rating. "Water-repellent design" = some hydrophobic conformal coating on the inner boards if you're lucky
