Yeah AMD have always given me issues with drivers for the last few cards I've had from them, 270x, 290, RX580..
Its been a lot better of late but there was a time Windows would stick some drivers on at install and anything beyond that would crash when putting newer versions on...

this all smacks of AMD PR and conveniently finding something to consume over 10GB

I wouldn't be surprised either.. Hold back the best binned dies for later, couple them up with slightly faster RAM and you've got an all new card!

Of course, but it doesn't alter the reality that we're already starting to see games requiring >10GB VRAM (even if that's with all the LOD stuff cranked up to 11), and it's a situation which is likely to become more common in a year or two. It doesn't bode especially well for the longevity of this first gen of 10GB Ampere cards, and was one reason why I'm reticent about 'upgrading' to a 3080 from my 11GB 1080Ti.

Given all those nuts requirements, foliage lod switch popping up at clearly visible range (around 1:30), that's 1. shame and 2. disturbing game play.
