Erm...ok...
The engineer in me goes: "yeah, that's cool" (heh)
But every other fibre of my being goes "err, right...so first we have a 1HP chiller cooling a 28 core xeon for a fake presentation and now we're strapping 300w cooling solutions to our chips..."
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
As if the power-draw of these chips isn't bad enough...Another 200w to power the cooler?
Jesus wept.
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
I watched the Linus video on it last night, with the golden chip thing.
It works... but the limitations and risks put it back into its 'niche interest' box.
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
I remember when i wanted to go phase change cooling in my computer, and when i considered TEC cooling.
It was when i was young and stupid.
I hope people are aware of the dewpoint issue, with more extreme forms of cooling.
I am going to spend those 200W at something sensible instead.

That's what the rubber socket surround is for.
As Linus pointed out, it works fine on the 10900, but you'd need one specifically for your Mobo if you were using a different socket, and since they're unlikely to make a load of surrounds for older boards, that's the limitation that puts it back in the box.
I'd certainly love one, as my chip runs very hot, especially in Summer. I was idling in the mid-upper 30s on water temp. Even now, it's about 17ºC ambient and my water is pushing 30º. GPU is fine, it's just the CPU doing all this.

I thought peltier coolers died out decades ago for good reason. Cost, reliability, all that extra total heat to get rid if.

It's not meant for the mainstream or anywhere close to it, it's meant for very high end enthusiasts or professional applications where single threaded performance is key who want to go further than high end water and so are willing to make those sacrifices.

Something like the old Vapochill evaporatve cooler designs I could imagine.
At work there was some debate over 3900X and 3950X machines on whether they should use even an AIO water loop. AMD recommend them, but the one thing you can't do is have the machine not available and an air cooler is so much simpler and more reliable.

What's next Intel, an LN2 pot in the retail box?
As much as I respect the engineering, 200w isn't worth it.

And the occasional part-time mechanic who gets smacked round the head by a Good Ideas Fairy... Friend of mine was banging on about making one for his rig, a couple of years ago. We took the piddle until he gave up and bought some fancy red Monsoon kit instead. :D
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
Thats one way to sort the 14++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ problem I suppose.
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
Ha I found an old peltier plate while tidying a few weeks ago, and wondered whether modern control systems would make that approach more manageable.Lo and behold...
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
Ummm... using a TEC for cooling hardware is nothing new. It just isn't used much because it's insanely inefficient.
Re: Intel Cryo Cooling tech debuts in EKWB & Cooler Master products
saying cooling capability of 300watts is very mis-leading 200watt will only say give 120watts of cooling, to the CPU I think what is being said is it can handle a CPU load of 300Watts before it cannot handle the overall load which would be 300watts+200watts into the Radiator (500watts) the CPU would still effectively be at a heat profile of a tdp of 180watts and quite toasty if running at 300tdp. etc

Minimum spec requirements on the cooler box....... 1000 WATTS power supply (14nm ++++++++++ CHRONICLES)
