And this is why I decided to get a Xbox series X when I saw stock at RRP. I'm just not going to fight for a new card this year. Sure my rx480 is beginning to age but I can wait for stock levels to even out over the next year (and the likely 3070 supers/6950/6900x's to come along).
    Trust

    Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1545 with Ryzen 5500u, 16gb and 256 NVMe, Windows 11.

Combine the wait for a better card with one coming in for WAY less money than expected (it seemed everyone was expecting 900-1000 quid) and you've just got huge demand
Demand isn't the issue, there's always demand, but I get what you are saying with regard higher demand.

The issue is lack of stock, so little stock they couldn't even meet low demand.

Demand was solid - as good if not better than 30XX series demand. Just the hype and the fact people have been waiting so long for this generation means they have no way to meet the demand. People seem to forget about covid. It's had a mahoosive effect on EVERYTHING this year

I wish that sellers gave us the option of joining a queueing system so we could go ahead and order a card and know it would be on a first come, first served basis. Even if that means they can't list the card as 'in stock' for weeks/months, it would mean that they would have a large list of orders already in the bag. I suppose they don't all want to do that otherwise people would order from multiple places and then cancel the rest when the first one dispatches.

IMO the tech company's have been both cynical and disrespectful towards the customer this year. The pandemic and demand excuses for shortages are frankly bollocks, don't offer for sale OR be up front about the drip supply that they KNOW is all they can get to the marketplace. In my eyes they spent more time trying to out fox competitors than getting all their ducks in a row for the paying customers and unfortunately both of them will not really suffer from the brass neck arrogance displayed with these launches.

I know AMD often underperforms in OpenGL applications compared to Nvidia, is that true for OpenCL as well?

Exactly my thoughts. NV showed what they think about their customers with 20xx series when they hiked prices to absurd levels and showing nothing in return. I really hope people will have some common sense and go with amd this time just to give NV some reality check. NV plays very bold corporate & profit first game and quite frankly doesn't think much of their customers as long as they part with their money.

Alas profit is the number one reason why Nvidia or any other for profit company exists. As you suggest, NV will only think about their customers more once they begin losing them. At the moment, with them selling out of anything which they put out, customer loyalty isn't going to be very high on their priority list at the moment.

Some benchmarks on ROCm and other benchmarks over on Phoronix, sadly I can't post the links but you'll find them on the front page or in the forums.

Re: AMD Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT stock levels disarmingly low

Went online after debating with myself to go back to team red and give it a bash. Cannot get one. Looks like everyone is doing this. I'm in retail and I am used to working with historic sales surely these guys use these figures. But the reason I'm going over to team red to give it a bash is NV's prices have become silly.. Oh well will put up with 2xxx series for another 6 month's then get one and maybe the prices will drop.
