Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2020?

On Wednesday I was outbid on eBay for a second-hand Netgear Orbi mesh wifi satellite; the very next day I spotted a brand new one in Amazon's Black Friday deals for less than I had bid for the used one. They've been out of stock on Amazon for months and suddenly they had loads available on Black Friday, hmm.

Also, got a Bosch cordless jigsaw for £20 lower than it's been all year (and I've been keeping an eye on the price).

So there are some genuine bargains to be had on proper things that real people would want; you just need to know what you want and how much it normally costs, otherwise you can get fleeced.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2020?

was waiting to see if DDO expansions went on sale at steam, last time was a few years ago on black friday for around the £6 mark instead of £20 odd, so had somewhat moderate hopes but alas it was not meant to be. SSG just anounced that theyre removing all he expansions from sale on jan 9th and doing something new next year, will wait and see what that is.

so bought Shadow of War: definitive for £7.99 to add yet another game to the 'play next' pile.

and my mum asked whether there was anything i wanted for christmus and was poking about amazon. up popped a 'related to stuff you've bought in the past' ad thing, and what do you know. its a book i had lost all hope of getting that i haven't seen in stock in 6 years. Gotrek & felix anthology. so nabbed that and the new 5th omnibus that came out yesterday, and ghoulslayer, that i didnt know existed.
    is a 2nd hand copy, but i don't care.

thats it. a few books and a steam game that i was going to get in christmas sale at some point anyway.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2020?

A monitor which I had my eye on for a while, which had gone down to the lowest price I'd ever seen it, even with discount codes etc.

    32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 DDR4 RAM - £100ish

MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI Motherboard £140. With £27 Black Friday MSI provided cashback and Assassins Creed Valhalla PC Code also promised. Since I was intending to buy the game anyway, but wouldn't pay more than about £30, I consider the cost around about £80 in the end.

Considered buying a PSU today, but there weren't any real savings around and of course no luck with the 5600X CPU and 6800XT GPU either.

Prior to Black Friday, I spotted a Crucial P2 1TB M2 SSD for £85. Bought it as I thought it wouldn't be any lower than that on Black Friday. It wasn't, it was nearer it's normal price of £100 so happy I bought then

Just found out last week that I owe HMRC quite a few thousands in capital gains tax........so no new toys for me for a while.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2020?

Not today specifically, but still in the Black Friday week sales, yesterday I went for the 12TB WD_BLACK D10 7200rpm External HDD that was pointed out on HUKD.

Mainly as if I recall correctly, it's a datacenter drive inside and the highest capacity available at that speed (for a good enough price when on offer anyway), and £187.99 seems to be the cheapest it has been thus far, so perfect to shuck and use as an internal drive.

    Ouch.

Mind you, a few grand in CGT suggests a substantial capital gain in order to incur the tax on it, so that cloud has a definite silver lining.

Nothing on Friday, although I did grab a couple of 1TB m.2 SSDs really cheap, last week.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2020?

The only thing I bought was some more dog poo bags from Amazon after a perusal of prices on things on my wish list, none of the prices had dropped enough (if at all) to entice me on those. Being a responsible dog owner is far more important.

Nothing. I'm another sceptic of the extent of real discounts.

Which week was this black Friday on anyway. Claimed discounts have been running for a week and will probably continue for another, if it was yesterday, I suspect.

Re: QOTW: What did you buy on Black Friday 2020?

Not a thing. Its a scam. Prices lower at other times of the year, it is now just a marketing ploy to use against the dim. At one point black friday did actually mean super deals, now its meaningless.

    Well, yes and no

Got divorced at the start of this year, so we had to sell the house and half the proceeds went to my ex.

I also owned a one-bedroom flat that I'd let for a number of years, and had to live in that for six months while all the financial stuff was agreed (I strongly recommend not living in a one-bedroom flat when you have two kids living with you at weekends, during lockdown....looking back I've no idea how I got through that period without losing my mind!)

Eventually I was able to sell that and put the proceeds towards the 2-bedroom flat I live in now. The CGT was the result of selling the 1-bed flat as, apart from the 6 months I lived in it, it was classed as a second property. I know I was fortunate to have a second property in the first place but, financially, the divorce has set me back massively so getting that huge bill for CGT just as the dust was settling was a kick in the proverbials (especially as I don't have thousands of pounds lying around in cash, it's all tied up in my current property). Oh, and they want the money by January

All things considered, 2020 was a year to forget. Roll on 2021!

Double ouch. Treble ouch, even. An 'annus horribilis', indeed.

I'm sorry to hear that .... on several levels. I didn't intend to poke at what was, obviously, a rather tender spot. Sorry about that. It's not much consolation, but I suppose at least it gets those kicks out there, to be dealt with, and hopefully the New Year sees things move, as PeterB would have said, onwards and upwards.

By chance a TP-Link WiFi/Bluetooth card dropped from 55 to 40. Otherwise a CPU I was hoping to get went up in price. And this morning the CPU magically came back down. Such a con now. If I was a retailer I wouldn't participate.
