Only a guess but i would think new motherboard as they use lower voltages.

Not only the new voltages, the modules will be different if for no other reason than to stop users frying them by putting them into existing boards.
Besides, DDR5 is possible the biggest change since DDR was introduced: 2 channels per module, some rudimentary onboard error correction.
Needless to say no current CPU's IMC supports DDR5 as the spec was only finalised back in July.

Basically a new motherboard and everything that goes on it outside of the pcie parts lol.

New cpu (intel will because intel and amd has integrated controller)
New cpu socket (most likely)
New ram
Probably new ram sockets due to dual channel of ddr5, lower voltage etc.

Might need a new psu too depending on if manufacturers decide to use the new power socket standard (ATX12VO if google is right)


So basically you might as well look at building a full rig lol

It's what I call "the guts" - CPU, motherboard, RAM. Every CPU upgrade I have ever done has had to be a "guts" upgrade.

Also, as said earlier, I can guarantee that DDR5 will need a new CPU and motherboard. Memory controllers are part of the CPU these days. No current CPU on sale has a DDR5 capable controller.

Something else to bare in mind: DDR5 will be stupidly expensive when it first comes out and will not offer much more performance than DDR4 in the real world (apart from maybe in APU's)

If past transitions are anything to go by the early performance differences will probably be negligible, we reached peak latency sometime ago and since then it's been about increasing bandwidth and lowering voltages.
