DOSBox Pure aims to be as simple as a console emulator

Among many charms it works with RetroArch and can run games / load CDs from zip files.

Having just spent the time with an Emulation Station frontend on a Pi 3 it's a great idea.

Ah endless hours spent modifying the rules.ini file on C&C Red Alert to make the tanks fire missile attack dogs.

LMAO! brilliant, wish I would have gotten in to that stuff in them days, only played, no modding, thinking about it now it would be quite easy.

Interesting. Haven't tried DOSBox in a while. I'll have to give it another look.

I'm lucky enough to own retro hardware (including CRTs), so I tend to overlook emulators like this. Always useful though

It was barely modding. You just copied a section of a large file into a new one called rules.ini (I think) and it specified how long weapons took to build (nukes in <1 second = instawin), what prerequisites were required for tech, what things fired, etc. It was more a complex cheat than serious modding.

Re: DOSBox Pure aims to be as simple as a console emulator

There are lots of different versions of DOSBOX, all have their pros and cons. Personally, I mainly use DOSBOX CRT with the DBGL frontend. The only thing it doesn't appear to support is VSYNC, so you can end up with awful screen tearing in some games, and screen tearing is one thing I truly hate about retro gaming. I do however love the CRT monitor overlay and the shader that DOSBOX CRT uses, as it makes DOS games look a lot less pixelated.

MS-DOS games have never looked so good on modern monitors.
