I think the slippery slope was already well underway at that point. The 560, like the 460 before it, was a games oriented consumer card and sacrificed fp64 compute performance for game shading ability. That was fine by me, which is why I bought a 460, but you were actually getting not only less silicon but a beast of a very different nature to the high end.
Re: Have Asus price rises inspired other PC components makers?
In regards to the thread topic at hand, it will be interesting to see if MFR switch stock priority to areas outside of the US given what should be a cheaper cost.
In regards to GPU pricing of course things have gotten more expensive, but this boils down to more than just Nvidia (AMD, Intel etc) wanting more cash (and consumer pockets not increasing at the same rate).
Supply right now either as a result of Covid and/or mining, new console launch, fab capacity all play apart too. GPUs, as mentioned above, are vastly different beasts to what they were in the DX8/9 era and even within the same release cycle. Whether you use that functionality and whether or not it is value for money is up for debate, but the extra (or wasted silicon) likely isn't going anywhere and so unfortunately we pay for it even if it doesn't translate to traditional 'gains'.

Strange how wages don't rise at this rate?

Wages are constrained by all of the stuff mentioned above. Whilst that pushes UP prices it keeps wages low....
A-Level economics was wasted after not using it.... ho hem

I bought a PN50 4700U for £330 in mid-nov, sent it back unopened in early january. Checked price now , £550 AMZ. Should have had my scalpers hat on!

Scan still list those at sensible prices. Are you sure the amazon price is amazon itself and not a scalper? Also why did you return it? they look like a great piece of kit. I'm getting one for my parents to use.
Edit: I can't find any pn50 listed on Amazon at all anymore. Are you on the uk site?

Yeah its beyond ridiculous. It makes me wonder if when the GPU/mining fiasco dies back down if even used GPUs will return to their price just one or two months ago.

You're welcome
True, but it did help push EVGA in that direction.
