The prize of 'tens of thousands of dollars' probably doesn't get the top tier of hackers out of bed, white hat or black hat.

And I'm sure I've seen the phrase un****able somewhere else.

Also for maximum impact I'd bet some would wait until it was in production/use.

What hackers... hackers today can't hack for crap at all... it is simple as that, hacking was pro in the old days, when you actually had to develop tools and ways and typing out stuff, instead of letting a premade program you gound on the net do the thing for you.

Why would hackers these days develop their own programs if the premade ones from yesteryear's hackers are good enough, though?

    Make Hacking Great Again! /s

But seriously, in my day you had to design and build your own computer and programming language before you could hack anything. All the hackers you’re on about can’t hack for crap, they used pre-built computers!

"Imagine trying to solve a Rubik’s Cube that rearranges itself every time you blink. That’s what hackers are up against with Morpheus,"

So I would imagine actually getting hold of the hardware would leave it more exposed.

Strategies are different now. Your old "pro" hackers using their techniques wouldn't find squat on modern software using their traditional techniques. It was practical to faff with programs that fit into 16K of RAM manually. Unfortunately for your rose tinted specs, modern machines now have 1 million times that typically.

bingo. use the official test period to work out weaknesses, but hold back saying "oh no, can't do" then once it's out, bam.

How old-school are you going? Script kiddies have been around for ages. Bearing in mind if you want to do anything remotely complex these days, off the shelf tools just won't work and you end up having to do a load of stuff manually anyway. I remember testing a program that proported to set up a wifi honeypot, degrade HTTPS and a couple of other things all with one command. Of course it didn't work and just tripped over its own feet in a faceplanting mess.

Amusingly, I've been trying to "prove" how terrible Windows defender is and how easy it is to hack. I downloaded a FUD RAT / backdoor generator from t'interweb and installed it on a Kali machine I wasn't too attached to - just getting it to install was a nightmare. I set up a windows 10 VM and set about generating a few "FUD" backdoors and so on. I spent hours trying to find one that got past Windows Defender IRL (as in not using online tools to test and it being downloaded via a website hosted on my Kali machine's webserver, so kinda real world conditions) and, the one that did wouldn't execute.

I've come to the conclusion that a lot of these tools are more hype than use. Sure, they may be excellent when they first come out but after a few months of submissions to Virus Total and so on, they become totally useless.

i guess the issue is what happens in the first few months. And for those cases, as the BBC headlines yesterday, it is state sponsored actors/endorsed parties with resources and skills creating new and novel exploits that are the largest risk it would seem.

Y'all just need to watch some Johnny Lee Miller films and get yourself some mirror-shades. Then you can hack anything!
