I'm running Core 17s in my PCs that have 4 cores each.
6 cores 12 threads, amd 1600x
4 cores / 4 treads. I only have 4 as i want a decent IGP (Ryzeb 3 2200G).
I have never needed more than 2 cores despite gaming and doing normal stuff (browsing, office, skype..) -
When would you like to have more than 4 cores - I mean most gaming is restricted by GPU anyhow.

Bought a 10700K with change for $277 inc.tax yesterday at Microcenter, so the build I'm buying parts for will have 8/16 when it's running in a couple of weeks. A nice boost from the 4670K in my last rig with 4/4.

You say this however I went from a 2600K with 4c/8t to the 9700K with 8c/8t and decided it wasn't much of a step up, so picked up a cheap 9900KF with 8c/16t. Something just didn't really sit right with me. I think you would probably miss the extra threads if you downgraded, although chances are you'll be able to skip threadripper and just get a normal Ryzen with more cores / threads when you do next upgrade.

12c via R9 3900XT, just recently upgraded from 16 cores which were dual 8c E5 2690 Xeons and before that I had dual 6c Xeon X5650s. So I've gone 12c -> 16c -> 12c over the last 6 years or so.

Weird how cores have been in my machine over the past decade, FX6300 6 core --> 6600K 4 core --> 5600x 6 core.

Latest machine? 12c in the form of a 3900X, work's laptop, a 4c i7 (can't remember what model, but it doesn't exactly trip off the tongue but it's getting on for about 6-ish years old now though, Intel naming conventions aren't getting any better it seems), previous desktop machine a 6c 3930k.
Just changed the main PC's CPU to a Ryzen 5600X, so 6c/12t. It previously had a Ryzen 2700X in it, which was 8c/16t.
So less cores, but better performance and far less power consumption. That's a win, win as far as I'm concerned

4 cores, 4 threads, 4 GHz. Been on the same Sandy Bridge chip since 2011. As much as the idea of more cores is appealing, I don't actually need more.
My laptop has 6 cores and 12 threads, though. It's superior for CPU performance, but is also noisier and has less storage, so I typically use the desktop.
It looks like single-digit answers don't appear, so...

i5 9600k, 6 cores at 5hz. Runs fine for most games and apps.

My current PC has an i7 875k with 4 cores/8 threads, but I have a PC on order from Scan which I'm waiting for, and that will have a Ryzen 7 5800x with 8 cores/16 threads. Hopefully I'll get that within the next couple of weeks! I would have liked a 5900X, but they haven't shown as being in stock for a long time.

Just upgraded from a 4/4 i5-4670k
6 cores AMD 3600
4790k 4+4 @ 4.4GHz. Not much reason to upgrade heat compromised Intel or over priced AMD. Especially as I can't even buy a faster GPU to match a faster CPU.
6/12 in my XPS 15 but want a desktop too, the Dell gets hot quickly under load
12, and it was totally overkill upgrade from my Ryzen 5 3600. But i'll leave it there :P
4C/4T. Kinda itching for an upgrade but that means new mobo and RAM as well.

6C/12T - 3600 - I've struggled to really use 6 cores so more is just overkill.
Heck I've found my budget 4 (A8-5550) and 2 (Celeron N2930) cores laptops from 6 years do the job most of the time if I'm not gaming as long as they have an SSD in them. I'm really not convienced have more than 6 cores is of any benefit on a desktop unless you are rendering or do scientific work (or something else unusual) and even then a faster GPU is usually more important now.
