Noctua NH-P1 passive CPU cooler hits retail at $100

PC must have "good natural convection" or you should add a fan for semi-passive operation.

You will need to be installing in a well vented PC case, an open benchtable-type setup or a PC case with fans in order to achieve the full performance of this cooler.
Passive CPU cooler works best in case that has lots of fans...

I would prefer the warranty to be much longer than 6 years considering there are no moving parts (for comparison the Arctic Liquid Freezer II has a 6 year warranty, and clearly has significantly more potential for failure).

Pricey metal. I wonder what will happen after 6 years with it, definetly will not stop working.

Not sure about that. The air around the cooler might start to move slower after some years...

As I understand it, it's more the heat pipes that are the worry areas.

I suspect the it is by far most likely that it will become obsolete due to CPU socket changes, long before there is any chance of anything going wrong with it. I'm sure any problem due to manufacturing defects, will surface well inside 6 years.

Another site has mentioned weight at 3.3lbs/1.5Kg?

(Was a meaningless comment. Would delete it if I could.)

Yup not for everyone at all despite the noise reduction. For me, for example it would be other factors rather than the cpu fan causing the noise (gpu usually)

Another passive branded cooler system. Active one is more effective!

I still think they should have just used standard thickness fins and stuck a block of aluminium on top of the coldplate (between the heatpipes and the fins). That way you still have thermal mass with a high conductivity path to the hot bit, but it's a lot simpler to manufacture and has the CoG closer to the MB so less torque on the socket. My silverstone AR-01 (i.e. comparable to a hyper 212) happily cooled my 3700X passively, albeit in a very well ventilated case.

Arctic also sell a passive cooler, but it's a lot simpler (it's just a solid block of extruded aluminium). It also has a 6 year warranty

The Noctua NH-P1 has now officially launched at US$110.
Check out the 'How to build a passive PC with the Noctua NH-P1' video below.

    Very interesting video.

I wont mind trying to build a passive computer, if or whenever prices and components become more reasonable and accessible.
