More interestingly I've just noticed that if you have a Pi4/400 there is now a pretty easy way to get Win 10 ARM edition running on them.
This opens up the whole ARM cpu v x86 debate in a more meaningful way and means that if someone can get a decent ARM chip for Win 10 up and running in the vein of the M1 we can start and see if it will be better in the future. Pi400 was used in the tests I saw, I imagine that someone will port it to say a Mac Mini to see how it performs but the Pi400 came in at around the sort of spec of a thin and light from say 4 years ago. I'd imagine that a new AMD equipped Exynos would be around the speed of an M1 chip in many ways and could, if done right, kickstart this whole movement. I wonder how many people would be interesting in a Mac Mini with Win 10 installed as for example their work pc
    Or maybe not?

Not that passmark is the most accurate benchmark and multi-platform is always tricky to bench.
The Exynos 2100 is pretty recent:
    1. 5nm (5LPE) Samsung process[145]
    2. 6MB System Cache
    3. CPU features
    4. 1 + 3 + 4 cores (2.91 GHz Cortex-X1 + 2.81 GHz Cortex-A78 + 2.2 GHz Cortex-A55)
    5. 19% better perf on single thread[146]
    6. 33% better perf on multi threads[147]

Yet has a single threaded score nearly half of the M1.
I'll say it again. M1 has a tdp said to be 15w yet plenty of tests have shown it to use 18 or 20w easily. The 2100 has a MAX tdp of 9w. The M1 has the DRAM on board so can't be expanded.

If somebody wanted to make a laptop chip similar to how the m1 is configured and used I reckon they could be close but currently I don't see many laptop manufacturers who would look to run ARM Windows being hamstrung with a fixed amount of ram. Apple is able to make the m1 how it wants because they own the whole stack - nobody else has that ability right now

Samsung have no plans to flog off Exynos they just chose to close down the custom core department. Part of that is they have lacked a bit in that department but part is also down to the proposed NV buyout. I wonder how Apple will fair IF NV get ARM as they will suddenly find that it's a heck more expensive to deal with ARM if that happens

Apple have a true architectural licence and their cores have very little to do with ARM's design.
So unlike just about all the other ARM vendors, they probably don't care.
ARM might be more worried if the most powerful ARM-compatible design doesn't have any intention of implementing ARMv9 as that will fragment the ARM market.

NV and Apple have no love lost. Historically they have argued for ages...

When Nvidia sold all those millions of parts with faulty solder (bumbgate), Apple were about the only OEM who stood by their customers by replacing the logic boards. I think I heard of people going through 2,3,4 or even more logic boards at the time. Nvidia probably insisted that it was all just a faulty batch and didn't admit that all the replacement parts were faulty too.

I'm sure there were other issues between Nvidia and Apple, but that might have been the start.

Yup but then there was the gfx cards being poor and NV not allowing faster parts for Apple and bumping the prices up etc.
Both are as bad as each other - which is my point. NV are not against making life difficult and bending the rules to suit themselves, just like Apple

Yep, Apple and Nvidia are both immensely greedy and user hostile.

Just because I admire what they've done with their SOCs since buying PA Semi, doesn't mean I like it; would far prefer if other ARM vendors were able to deliver similar performance.

If being picky, I'd rather those other vendors to not be only Qualcomm as they too are very much into monopolies. ARM offering better performing designs to licence would be best, and it looks like ARM are finally interested in server and workstation design, just hope any NV purchase doesn't mess with their licence model. A bit unrealistic but then NV's bid looks like it's going to run in trouble with regulators anyhow.
