UK full fibre grows but it remains third from bottom in Europe
Quote:
Full fibre penetration in the UK is just 3.7 per cent, but is available to 15 per cent of homes.

It must be part of the issue is that there seems to be nowhere to register an interest in having such a service. Looking at BT's website, they say "register your interest"... then don't link to anywhere to do so.

Is Virgin cable not fibre to the home? So you're telling me only 3.7% of the UK get cable?
Virgin themselves say they reach 53% of the UK - https://www.virginmedia.com/postcode-checker
Surely more people have taken it up then that?

Cable to the premises is not the same as Fibre to the premises.
Currently on DOCSIS 3 (or is it 3.1), maximum bandwidth is around 400-500mbps with fibre going to the cabinet.
Fibre to the premise is technically 1gbps bidirectional.

And yet the vast majority of people don't need it. I guess, like most things, people see the numbers and think that they must get it because 'bigger is better' and pay through the nose for bandwidth they don't touch.

Most people don't need it but you don't understand that by pushing for FTTP also means dramatic infrastructure upgrades which prove a more stable service at more consistent speeds.
The general public is consuming bandwidth at greater and greater rates, it's amazing it didn't collapse when the pandemic started and everyone had to shift to working from home.

Bigger IS better in this case.
Having gigabit made me forget about internet speed, it's not a problem anymore, its something of the past. Netflix 4k on 2 TVs? While downloading games on steam and watching youtube at same time? Sure, bring it on, I don't need it, but just like a good wine I'd rather have it.

It would take openreach being nationalised (which will not happen) to resolve.
Imagine if a fraction of the resource put towards HS2 was put towards the UK communications infrastructure to improve business whilst reducing unnecessary travel.

My cynicism would say "nothing would change!" :P

It will take a government that actually delivers promised investment...

I registered my interest on the Openreach website, and got an email informing me when full fibre was available in my area. If you go on the Openreach website now, you can check availability:

I don't need it, it's true. But I decided to try it out because I could :) And now I do have it, I don't think I could ever go back to a 72 mb/s service, which is what I upgraded from...

I went from 300 to 72 mbps and I can happily say I hate every second of it.

I have to say, I still know when the Taskmistress is downloading an episode of something on our 900Mbps line, because my game downloads take a noticable hit.

Ah ok, although after googling what you said about DOCSIS 3.1 is wrong - it can do up to 10Gb theoretically. Virgin offer 1Gb using it (in several cities planning to offer it everywhere by the end of 2021). In the future Virgin will have DOCISIS 4.0 that will offer 10Gb in real life. Hence I suppose the distinction between that and fibre to the premises is mostly a technical difference not something that's preventing higher bandwidth.
