Given Google are the main supplier here, they aren't doing it for the good of your health.

They're massively useful for training machine learning algos though.

So that when the machines take over they know where we hide?

When they realised they could use Captchas for this, it hit 2 massive birds with one stone.
Are they human and training driving AI, it's been years since it's been anything other than stuff you would see on a road.
Personally, I think these turing test based Captchas are great and yes they're annoying but like with any form of security, better security means less usable/take longer.
The only thing that really frustrates me is when it seems to have messed up and asks me 3-6 times to find something.

Once in every ten days?
I call BS.

Re: Cloudflare on CAPTCHAs: "it's time to end this madness"
so you plug in a kay and you can avoid the captcha's? What's to stop a bad actor putting a security key into an automated system?? This seems to be trying to leverage secure identity management systems like yubikey in a way that could be actually damaging to the idea of secure identity system.
If you can't leave your key plugged in (which would negate it identifying you as a human surely) then you have to hunt for the key, find a free usb slot, plug it in and click a button. I think I'd rather click on the sailboats with my mouse or finger.

Re: Cloudflare on CAPTCHAs: "it's time to end this madness"
Pass.
And using my VPN i get to try these often, some times even in feedback loop meaning no matter how many times i do the captcha they just kick out a new one, in those cases i have to change VPN server.
If google are in on this, i sure as hell do not want it.

If your IP happens to be a TOR exit node, you'll get this a lot. I use TAILS and TOR when taking down scam websites. Part of that is obviously finding the hosting company and reporting abuse, but their websites are full of these things. 6+ isn't uncommon and it's very frustrating. I could just do that part off TOR but I like to report them whilst I'm poking around the website and wasting their time with fake submissions from multiple IPs.

That's just the typical person. Those of you who spend time on the dodgier pron sites will see it far more frequently.

Both my home and office networks certainly are not TAILS or TOR networks.

I rarely get them when doing normal browsing.

I use script and adblocking for some sites. Not having javascript available is a red flag to the CAPTCHA police.

Wonder how much much of an effort is required for a comunity of rascals to coordinate failing all the "click the bicycle/pedestrian crossing/parking meter" challenges by just clicking open roads. In time the AI will start believing it, then it filters down to self driving cars and you've got an automated Death Race 2000 on your hands.

The sheer volume you would have to perform to do that would be insane and they use their dataset also to validate what you're selecting so if you're wildly out it will flag it as a potential error for verification (I would presume as it would be sensible else any cheeseball would organise something to mess it about).

They include some previously validated images to check for that.

Re: Cloudflare on CAPTCHAs: "it's time to end this madness"
we need a Captcha that asks us for "all the squares with tin foil hat in" and then pictures of me and Saracen and a few others :)

I'm enjoying the series, the books any good? I'm actually tempted for once.
Also, I get the whole captcha thing, but when they start asking me what a random thingy is they have lost me. I am an Englishman.

aw now that could be a great one. Stick up the following as a captcha, click all the images containing thongs:
https://external-content.duckduckgo....6pid%3DApi&f=1
https://external-content.duckduckgo....6pid%3DApi&f=1
https://external-content.duckduckgo....top&f=1&nofb=1

https://external-content.duckduckgo....6pid%3DApi&f=1

between language barriers and poor literacy that should render a good chunk of the internet population unable to get through on the first attempt.

I don't see how usb keys plugged all the time on your computer are going to be better.

nor me, anything that relies on some kind of electronic signal can surely be spoofed by a machine somewhere along the way. captchas are annoying but they kind of work, and don't rely on me not losing something. I lost my wallet today and couldn't do any banking for 2 hours until it turned up. And that's for something relatively large. A micro usb is just going to go awol. plys many laptops are relatively devoid of usbA and not very generous with usbC these days. Sod off asking for something else to have to go in them! With my mouse and usb drive I've filled mine already. I'll stick with captchas for preference tbh.

unfortunately google recaptcha is really crap at avoiding bots, there are so many services that bypass it which allow spam to get through the 'bot checks'. Its great for their AI training for sure but ive noticed recaptcha fail significantly in the last couple of years for its primary purpose, I have had to implement other manual anti bot tactics to stop them getting past.
I dont see this doing any better as surely the bot farms will just buy up loads of keys and be done with it?

My point exactly. It's just a greater inconvenience for normal folk having to carry something around, not lose it, and have enough spare USB ports to run it in.

I'd have to say yes.
Remember that the guys who wrote the books are also the writers and producers of the programme, so there's a great deal of continuity.
They're quite different in many respects, but you will notice where (and why) the TV programme had to do certain things differently - For example, they combine some characters for the sake of brevity and due to the differences in media, while changing others simply because the TV version actually works even better.
The decriptions of the characters vary a bit, but you can still easily picture the actors they chose in the text, which is also very good casting.
Unfortunately, later seasons had to do things a bit differently due to various external matters having an influence on the production, but the majority of the books are still very much in evidence.
I'm actually re-reading the books right now during lunch breaks, including the short novellas, while watching episodes in the evening because the Ttaskmistress has never seen it.

That's good to know, I think I'll have to order the books, thanks!

I'm on book two here having watched the series. I'm finding book time easier to arrange than screen time atm and still haven't managed to watch the last series. I'm really enjoying the books, which I thought I wouldn't given the spoilers of watching the show, but I'm still getting sucked into the story.
Old Man's War book series is still my favourite sci-fi though. Thanks whoever on Hexus pointed me at that :D
