Noctua says its passive CPU cooler is "coming very soon"

And a recent interview with a Noctua exec revealed why it is taking so long.

I just don't get why that something like this would even be considered, I am almost certainly not the target market for this type of cooler I suspect...

Lower wattage cpus mean you can almost get a silent system. I imagine you'd be able to get a system that only needs a temp controlled intake fan and a temp controlled psu fan soon - plenty of people I know would like that. I do audio recording and mics pick up fan noise very very well....

Wonder what the max TDP on this cooler is? Seems unlikely suitable for performance CPU's, especially the likes of AMD, which tend to run much hotter even at idle.

My 5900x itself idles at 50c with the fan on low setting to minimise noise.. Takes me back to the Pentium 4 days with the heat it generates.

Clearly a niche cooler for the low wattage CPU's.

I get that, I set up a live demo system for the products the company sells and making sure the system was quiet was a must. But in the next iteration of our recording room, it will go into a sound proof cabinet. Similar with getting sound baffling in a case or getting a cabinet/setup where you can sound proof it would make more sense to me because the cooler looks absolutely massive.

To me, a decent water loop with maglev static pressure fans would be good enough as my system is currently. But then again, i'm not an extreme audiophile and am already losing my high range hearing so I guess I'm in the bottom rung for that!

My PC uses less than 90 watt and has passive cooling and APU graphics, SSD.

Totally silent PC which can do normal desktop-stuff and play some games in FHD (GTA V / WOT).

I like reducing noise, so passive would seem to be good in that perspective, but I feel that the lack of airflow to other components on the motherboard, such as VRM's, RAM, etc is something that must also be considered. I suspect that while a passive CPU cooler could be made to work on a low TDP model, you might have to increase the speed of case fans to compensate.

You are mistaking temperature for power usage, the reason Ryzen is running 'hot' at idle and load because it is a tiny surface area to heat, if it was spread over the same space as a full die you wouldnt have them stuck at a higher temp. You dont need any more cooling capacity for ryzen as it is low wattage, it just cant be cooled to such low levels that you used to see with say intel full dies as idle was easily 20 - 30c.

This would be perfectly suitable for ryzen as it will stablise the temps pretty quickly and wont make much change its also the reason why you need to set a fan delay for ryzen cpu fans as the temp will spike quickly but wont stay there.

Currently it’s intel performance cpus that run comparatively hot, not AMDs...

If your 5900x IDLES at 50c, you're doing something wrong or have a completely garbage cooler on it.

noise is some what nonsense if wearing headphones .. your not going to hear it .. but if your room bound with speakers then it's a problem ..
better bet is buy some noise cancelling headphones

Re: Noctua says its passive CPU cooler is "coming very soon"

I think ( not ever said my memory is good ) i read something about scientists also being able to hack computers via the fans, so another reason to not having fans

IMO Noise is relative, it should not matter at all for gamers wearing headphones at least while gaming.

Anyway people not old enough to remember the old days with two 40 mm fans doing 10.000 RPM on the CPU and a similar one on the motherboard and a screaming 80 mm Sunon fan or two in the case, well they should just STHU
Beside what people do to the ears ( still ) well it is a wonder there are not more deaf people, i am personally amazed i am not hearing impaired after the walkman years, and the years with 3 X 12 " sub woofers in the car each powered by a 500 W amplifier.
But it is my eyes that is lagging

I'm a bit OCD about sound and noise and I'm very much its target market, the idea of completely silent rigs has been a thing for me for years and I'm on my 3rd build right now

I guess I'm the only person that lives alone and games then? I have to have the volume turned up on my speaker system pretty loud if I want to avoid hearing my fans.

Or just a really slow fan, my 3700x fluctuates between 47-57c but then again the fan is only running at 650rpm.

There are no issues with a cpu idling at 50 degrees as that will be down to your settings. I have a few servers here that use passive coolers but the sound of 8 fans ramping up and down is tiresome. Slowly replacing servers with custom builds (usually older technology as I have plenty od ddr3 ecc memory to use up!)
