So, err, really bad for users then. But great for advertisers and pay-as-you-go or subscription-based app developers. Of course, Microsoft will accept their modest 30% commission.

Sigh, There is a vast difference between different versions of windows and an updated/redesigned W10 and this new version reads as an advertiser and or sub pay as you go c*m fest. Hopefully not but we shall see.

There's talk of a store refresh going round at the moment, supposedly it will allow apps to use their own payment providers and unwrapped win32 programs but other than maybe a visual refresh I don't see much else different really.

Does kind of sound like they're just getting in before the inevitable legislation restricting/preventing the monopolistic and/or anti-competitive approach of stores where they only allow you to use a specific payment provider.


Personally I think the 'next generation of Windows' is more a branding exercise thing than anything really major at this point. It will probably be a visual refresh tying everything together, better packaging of software through project reunion for easier development/installations, more pushing of the store (everyone's trying to get people tied into their stores) and maybe if we're lucky some of the 'better bits' of 10X (I did like the 'sandboxed' programs of 10X) will be added or planned to be added.

Actually when you think about it, no new version of windows has been that much different to the old version under the hood... it's probably time this changed but the clean slate of 10X was basically cancelled so who knows....

There might be some talk about the supposed 'remote desktop' as a service that's been talked about (probably by subscription.. I really HATE the way software has gone subscription)

I didn't. When Windows 95 came out, I was one of the early adopters. Same with 98, 2000, XP, 7 and 10.

Only one of these operating systems has made me really want to switch to Linux.
Only one of these operating systems forces updates on me that I can't control.
Only one of these operating systems routinely breaks my PC.
Only one of these operating systems steals information in a way that would have been called "spyware" back in the days of XP.
Only one of these operating systems moves things around in silly ways, so I don't know where things are.

I missed out ME, Vista and Windows 8 as they were also awful. But I had the choice. Now, if you need to use Windows, you're on 10 if you want security updates. You can't have overlapping version support when there's only one version.

Windows 8 isn't supported, that stopped in 2016 and windows 8.1 is now only supported by extended service agreements, mainstream support stopped in 2018.

Note I make a distinction between 8 and 8.1 because my s939 system isn't supported on 8.1 (the security change thing) but was able to run 8 more than well enough.
