Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Yeah, I had an Abit fall to the bad caps issue. And when I saw the crusty rusty red stain on my board, I thought at first I'd bled on my razor-sharp case during assembly and forgot to clean it up. In those days a blood sacrifice was kind of a normal thing, of course.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
The first PC I built completely by myself had an MSI AM2 motherboard that failed after several months (purchased in September 2006, and I think it failed around April 2007). I remember I was playing Tomb Raider: Legend at the time, and it stopped me playing it for over a month while I saved up for replacement parts. I wasn't sure whether it was the motherboard or PSU that had gone, but I was pretty certain it was one of them, so I went out and got a new PSU at the time, since the original was a relatively weak 380watt Antec PSU that came with the case... sadly, that didn't fix things, so a new motherboard was required. I remember I decided to upgrade the CPU heatsink/fan at the time too, since I had only used the basic stock heatsink/fan (which was noisy), and so it was the perfect opportunity to use something better, as I was going to have to remove everything anyway. I feel the build was cursed from the start, as the graphics card had originally failed within two weeks when I first got it (NVidia 7900GS).
I've not used an MSI board since, and reading some of the above comments, it seems MSI are worth avoiding in general!
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
I've had two motherboards fail since the Pentium II era* - both of which were Z77 ITX boards.
* fail from natural causes and not suicide OC runs
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Can't remember the last time I had a board die, think it was an old socket 7 one...
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
I had a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master completely give up on me after about 9 months of use. Not even Gigabyte could repair it. Just died.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Only one a very long time ago.. it was an Intel Triton II 430HX motherboard for a dx2 486. Since then all MBs I have owned have been upgraded / replaced before they have failed.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Yes I have, many years ago and it was PCChips :( Since then not in 20 years of building PCs
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Current board has failed me by not having support for ryzen 5000 series.
Old mobo boards
1. Abit IC7 Max 3 - Northbridge fan failed after a week. This is why I don't trust onboard mobo fans.
2. Asus P4C800 - VRM burned itself out - Nice red circle glow. I'm guessing at what it was. Was on the left hand side of the cpu socket so...
3. Asus P8Z77 - Something happened with this board also - Can't remember what right now. Forced me to upgrade to the z87. New CPU most likely. Always wanting to upgrade.
4. Asus Maximus VI Hero had longer pins at the top then the bottom. I overlooked this quality control error. I thought it was suppose to be like that for some reason. After this I had mysterious problems with my board until I took the CPU out 6 months to a year later :(. I thought the board just had bad bios. Now I triple scan the motherboard for any obvious problems. Some palm meeting forehead moments for sure.
All other boards since these have been fine.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Only once 10 years ago ASRock P55 Extreme 4
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Honestly I'm not sure. I have a GIGABYTE GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 sat in my loft that's either failed or the AMD 1600 has failed. The problem is although it's compatible with newer cores I hadn't updated the bios past the feature updates for my processor and so unfortunately it won't work with a higher series Ryzen. So it's a mystery I didn't want to take a chance on finding out. None of my buddies had a 1x00 Ryzen for me to test. Maybe I'll find one one day in a car boot sale and find out.
I updated to a 5600x and a Asus tuf gaming B550
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Only once, and it was a Dell BTX board.
Working one day, but the next day was unresponsive despite still being on the whole time.
After buying a new board, case (the Dell one only had the space for its own BTX) and PSU (the Dell one was obviously one with the connectors to go with that board and probably limited wattage anyway).
The replacement board did end up having a problem where only 2 out of the 4 RAM slots decided to work at a later point though, but I forget which manufacturer made the board, just that the CPU I transferred into it was a Q6600.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
I don't recall a MB failing but a few years back the plastic mount which the CPU cooler failed letting the cooler fall off & the CPU fried itself.

However, that hasn't happened for ages now so in this instance it seems to have repaired itself.
I had the same problem until i got the "ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA, haven't had any issues since.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
asrock back in pentium 4 era when they were jankyer than gpu's
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
buggy yes (most of them actually), but DOA no.
Re: QOTW: Has your motherboard ever failed?
Had a DFI motherboard fail in around 1997, I think I caught one of the tracks on the motherboard when I was putting one of the motherboard fixing screws in. So I cannot blame DFI for that. When I powered it up there was a puff of smoke from the track. Ahh well.
