Yup I think that's the consensus and why people objected so much
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
I never bought a rift as I was afraid what facebook might do. Yeah no thanks.
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
Seems Facebook is doing everything it can to keep people from wanting to buy its VR headsets.
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
Adverts (billboards) in game should be declared up front, I would not expect to be paying full price for a game with adverts.
Targetted adverts from Facebook in games can go *bleep* themselves.
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
Not used my Quest 1 for months, this sort of thing just makes me even less likely to use it :/
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
*shrugs* Up to the publishers/developers for how they want to get their revenue - offering an ad-supported free game is fine with me (I just won't likely play it), especially if there's the option to pay upfront and have an ad-free experience. Just as long as it is clear to the user and the contract isn't changed further down the line (which would get them in trouble with the regulators).

I don't think it will be just free games though, games like Dirt already have advertising on the boards as you drive by them. I think with Facebook you will get to actually click on them rather than just seeing them. Can't see it being a good thing

It's just part of how I'll assess whether to play a game or not - and it shows the importance of reviews from the likes of Hexus being representative of the real user experience. If reviews say ads detract from the game then I probably won't play it. The main problem is if reviews are not representative, in which case I'll just have to wait longer or if it changes after purchase then again get onto the regulators.
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
As long as ads are unobtrusive I don't necessarily see a problem with them per se e.g. if it's a billboard in the distance or some small hoardings you don't have to look at or interact with. My reservations are with FB potentially shoving them in your face at every opportunity like imagine seeing an ad while scrolling through your inventory or accidentally clicking on a webpage while you're exploring a new area. That would be game breaking for me.

Won't this split an already small community of potential customers into an even smaller one?
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
Quite likely, no matter what their privacy policy states you can pretty much guarantee your data will be used for targeted ads

For the price/performance you can't beat the Quest 1/2 right now, the facebook requirements/ads will remove a percentage of potential byers from the pool but there isn't a great alternative for most people so I wouldn't say it's a 'small' group.
NB/ Own a Q1, hate/don't have fb !
Re: Facebook plans to introduce ads to Oculus Quest games and apps
For as long as I can I will avoid all and any contact with Facebook.
I already have Google and Apple stealing all my data...

I know they made it optional to have facebook for a while. From 2023 its compulsory on all devices.
You are lucky to have a Quest 1, Quest 2 you have to have a Facebook account
