Sounds great, until you remember the fact that the 'UK's most powerful supercomputer' is firmly in the little leagues compared to others.

..and I'm not just talking about the USA & China, but some countries in the EU, who can't compete with the UK's University base, have more powerful examples.

More government investment would help but, Tory governments, over the last 11 years, have been completely unable to grasp the importance of education and scientific research. As long as Eton is doing OK, nothing else matters...

I am reliably informed it can play Crysis.

It is - if you look at biomedical base its one of the strongest in the world, and bioinformatics is a key part of it. I remember seeing the amount of computer power needed for the Human Genome Project - in Cambridge there were floors of server infrastructure needed for it.

Then the other aspect is also for things such as physics - in many countries supercomputers are used to model the nuclear reactions, needed for weapons and energy research.

I would like to think that the name was inspired by the Science of Cambridge MK14 (I couldn't find a FLOPS rating for it).

They did just announce the Advanced Research and Invention Agency about a month a go.
