Plenty of other businesses are interested in the offices, and the labs are seriously good property for the more specialised companies.
There is never a shortage of buyers for commercial property in a not-a-city like this. The land alone is ripe for yet more housing.

Modern ethos is recycle before redevelop due to carbon footprint etc. 10 years ago yup, wrecking balls, chompers and bulldozers. Now? the first, second, and third schemes will be retain, adapt and enhance.

I lot of towns seem to be in need of student accommodation, I would have thought it would he pretty easy to get up to that level usability.

Some look quite decent, a nice location with underground parking etc. Many offices seem dire for parking when packing desks in as an office, but should be more than enough for residential.

One office around here has turned into a big job centre.

Re: QOTW: Are you setup to continue working from home?

I found I hated working from home long term, so I quit my job a couple months ago when they didn't have any return-to-office plans, even for the fully vaccinated. I need to be around people to maintain my mental health. So far being intentionally unemployed has been great, and all that money I saved up last year is being put to good use.

Gear-wise, I do have a good home office setup - I just want to use it for things like travel planning, side projects, and gaming and keep the real work in the office with other people.

The story hasn't changed from 10 years ago, though, as we recently got rid of two lots of office buildings - The first went to a company who rents office space out to other companies. The other lot were ones we ourselves were already renting.

Are you following the recent journals? All the "responses to climate emergency declarations" and the like being put out by the institutes on how the industry and profession can respond etc. There is definitely a bigger push for it in the last 2 years than I've seen in my career before.

Not at all, but I am following what happens to all our old offices and works. One of them is now a housing estate, with 'Island' in the title because they ignored our strongly worded advice and built directly atop a flood plain!

Besides, even with any changes in the last two years, I don't see how you can 'recycle' a water or sewage treatment plant into a nice family-friendly housing area, due to the chemicals and processes involved. You pretty much have to knock it down, deep-cleanse the area and then develop.
