Quite impressive numbers considering the shortages....and the fact it wins the award for "Ugliest major games console to ever be released". It's simply not a desirable thing to have in my lounge.

I'll be curious how the sales numbers pan out when we get some independent numbers for both from the same source - i'd be fairly confident in the PS5 outselling the Xboxes again given how strongly brand loyalty & backwards compatibility influence console sales, but I would be equally confident that the gap is a lot closer this generation.

I don't know if it's a result of the pandemic or if I just don't frequent the right places but other than the initial launch (which I felt was quite muted but again may be for the same reasons) and shortages stories I have seen and heard absolutely nothing of the new generation of consoles.

Considering the shortage, or the cause of the shortage?

XBX has a higher spec (at least in terms of the APU), but Sony really seem to have outselling them by a lot by all accounts.

I'm very sceptical and curious how they have arrived at this number.

Perhaps stock is better in other countries?

Series X have had much more stock available/sold.

Whilst I wouldn't necessarily doubt a quotes number, I find it hard to believe given the lack of stock, they've managed to outsell even the Series X, let alone previous models.

There wasnt really a shortage of consoles, AMD put the wafer distribution heavily in favour of the consoles (for good reason), it was just divided between two major console launches and people wanting it now along with being stuck at home increased it but I dont think availability was actually signifdicantly worse than previous launches its just the demand was higher initially.

Anecdotally of course but a lot of people I know have switched to Xbox this time round after being rabid fans of sony for many generations, the fact Sony have very poor and limited backwards compatibilty compared to microsoft actually bringing a huge amount of their library back from previous consoles coupled with the fact game pass is amazing value along with microsoft buying bethesda (that was the final straw I think for a lot as they realised MS has decent exclusives).

It will be interesting to see the real world values but from my own bubble it seems like sony have sat on their hands for far too long instead of trying to improve their customer experience and features.

The spec is only one part of a larger puzzle, console gamers don't really buy a console based on spec the same way PC gamers objectify the parts they buy.

    What sells consoles is:
-Which previous generation did they own (If you owned an Xbox previously, you're more likely to stick with same brand)
-what games are available on the platform
----subsequently from the above, what games are available at launch
-Marketing of the console (tightly tied with the above)

For at least two generations, Sony has had a substantially greater number of exclusives at a higher quality than their competitor, Microsoft.

That's why for the XBone, MS tried to make it also a home theater device to try and expand their addressable market over just being gaming.

More PS5s have been produced than Series S and X combined in addition to being more desirable. MS have sold around 6.4m XSS/X since launch.

In this house we have been the opposite. We went PS3 to PS5, getting the XBox for the generation in between.

Now Mario Kart, that's different. We have them all going back to the Gamecube, but the Wii-U disk seems to have stopped working. Doesn't even look scratched, bit annoyed at that.

There are exceptions to every norm, indeed!

I know people who have only bought Playstation since the PSOne because they are Sony through and through and the same for XBox. Although with the Pandemic, I have seen more people buy Xboxs' during the Pandemic simply because they can't buy Playstations.

When asked which console to get by parents buying for their offspring, I usually ask them what the friend group has. Sharing games, joining in online etc and generally being part of that tribe can be quite a big factor.

There are still widespread shortages - I still cannot go to Amazon/Costco/Wherever and buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X...the reason is increased demand combined with a shortage of components - but its still a shortage, and a fairly big one imo.

That makes the sales race more interesting as its not just about demand anymore, its about who can secure enough components and get them put together fast enough..before a user decides to go with an alternative because its in-stock for a few seconds.

More and more titles have cross play (Nintendo aside,) which is making that less of an issue than it used to be as well.

PlayStation 5 reaches 10 million sold milestone. I am very, very doubt about the figure, stock is empty.

Re: PlayStation 5 reaches 10 million sold milestone in record time

Personally I picked a series X just down to game pass. It suits my style of gaming (starting lots, completing little), while quick resume makes the most of the little time I do have.

I just can't justify £60 on a game and never have.

I be honest in that I prefer the ecosystem too. Play a game from my original xbox/360/One - sure (and with various performance/quality boosts). Install a game from my phone so its waiting for me - sure. Give me free Microsoft points so I can buy the odd game not on game pass for nothing - sure. Want to stream a game to my phone from the cloud - sure. Whenever I've tried the sony ecosystem its always felt way more barebones and catch up (I have PS1-3). Sure there maybe a few stand out games I can't get from Sony but given the purchase price I wouldn't be playing them for several years anyway!

(I also have a switch but that suffers the same game price issue for me as a playstation.)
