Looks much better than the barebones old one.

That should be really handy even on my PC. What I'd like to see them do is add a way to see your native linux games separated from the windows ones, maybe that feature is already there but I could not find a way to do it this weekend.

If it's not games or DLC, what's that 488GB of 'Other' all about?
Is there that much guff and cosmetic junk in a typical Steam install?

As it's the C: drive it should be pretty obvious.

If it were Windows File Manager, sure... but I would expect Steam to only be concerned about Steam files, with everything else being none of its damn business.
I'm wondering if it, or something else, would be able to access that data or otherwise mess with it through this Storage Manager feature.

I would hazard a guess that it just removes the size of Steam files and free space from the drive size and gives that under 'Other', simples.

    I remain suspicious.
As is, the current version asserts that the Steam folders take up far more space than Windows says it does.

So yes, it should be obvious and simples, but so often we later find out it's not the case. I thus expect there will be ruffled feathers over something to do with this.
