Just remove iMessages - I never found it useful on desktop compared to Slack/Teams anyway (mind you, they probably have a similar hole somewhere).

I don't appear to have any updates on the iMac I am using (it is running Catalina).

Tell a lie. It said no updates and then I closed it and then reopened it to check if there is an update history and there it is.
