They need to ditch the eMMC storage...

Maybe it's just me, and considering windows 11 system requirements being 4GB minimum (8GB for android subsystem), but no windows pc should come with less than 8GB of ram now, especially when some of that 4GB of ram will be taken for the gpu.

These 4Gb machines remind me of some of the 256Mb Vista laptops I had to try fixing for friends/relatives. Sure it'll run but it won't be fun. Its definitely only chosen to hit a price point. Having been looking at laptops recently its been surprising how many have 8Gb soldiered in. It really does limit a devices life span... (I think it a deliberate choice to use LPDDR rather than DDR to increase power saving but I'd take the hit personally to be able to upgrade but I guess most people just chuck a device now :( ).
Re: Surface Go 3 specs confirmed ahead of 22 Sept Microsoft event
2 core is... a bit ancient. One model could have worked with a quad cpu, surely?
Re: Surface Go 3 specs confirmed ahead of 22 Sept Microsoft event
I should imagine they are using it as a cheap intro to the Surface line, kids for school work etc.
Re: Surface Go 3 specs confirmed ahead of 22 Sept Microsoft event
Give me one with a Ryzen in, and then I might consider it.

It's a shame it's Intel...

I can live with it being intel, although I would prefer better 'base specs', but I would actually prefer this to be a more affordable (and smaller) arm based machine for those of us want to 'play with arm' but not spend nearly £2000 (by the time you add on keyboard/pen etc) on the surface pro x just to find out a lot of stuff doesn't work well lol.

That's kinda where I'm getting at. The m3 and i3s are so insanely anemic they're a Celeron through any other means.
Putting Arm in these would also be a healthier start into the ARM ecosystem for Microsoft rather than making something out of most pocket with a spec that underperforms and can't have retrospective fixes because the sample size of usage is far too small.
Re: Surface Go 3 specs confirmed ahead of 22 Sept Microsoft event
These are companion devices, so the low power isn't that much of an issue. My main laptop at home runs on a 4.5w m7, it's fine. We give GOs to a couple of the people in our team who need to carry a device when they travel or are on holiday. With the LTE option they can chuck it in their holiday bag and know they can have a full-function device on the beach if the proverbial meet the fan. Can also charge off a phone USB-C charger so no more cables.
I've got a Go 1. Not the fastest, but bearable and runs the full corporate stack like my X1.
Go 4 may well be back on ARM, just need Qualcomm to pull their finger out and make a well-priced competitior to these Intel chips. I suspect MS are getting *very* good pricing on these.

Qualcomm need to make a decent competitor to the Apple stuff, the fact you can run Windows ARM on the new Mac stuff faster than the Surface X can run native suggests that there's an issue somewhere other than Intel..

Or samsung (the new google chip is possibly a rebadged exynos).... if their plans to merge arm cpu with amd gpu's, not to mention any AI cores they want to add, it could be a better overall chip to look at for windows on arm.
Either way 'someone' needs to make something comparable to the m1, if not the m1x (or whatever it's called)

That CPU and RAM....Sigh
Cheapest iPad will run circles around this thing.
