Here's a security exploit that, for once at least, won't result in your system being owned, but will allow pirates to have their wicked way. Microsoft are planning on rolling out a system whereby only verified legal copies of Windows XP will be able to download and install updates and so on. Of course, somebody has found a way around Microsoft's verification mechanism.[eWeek]Debasis Mohanty, a private vulnerability researcher and analyst of malicious programs, published a detailed proof-of-concept demonstration to show how the WGA validation check can be defeated to generate key codes for use on illegal copies of Windows XP.
