    Vista on the cheap

Vista could cost us less and cut down on piracy at the same time!
The skeptics among you looking toward the launch of Windows Vista will no doubt have something to say about the price of it when it hits the shelves. It turns out, however, that Microsoft could be making a surprising move when it comes to pricing of their up-coming OS.

    About time

That M$ did something sensible. This won't stop piracy: but hopefully it'll reduce it.

I may even dein to pick up a copy if the prices are right. Stick it on a spare S-ATA drive and see just how buggy it is

Great move at last by Microsoft as their OS's have been fairly pricey in the past

OEM should be fairly cheap by the look of that pricing - fingers crossed it will be round the 40-60 pounds mark.

I wonder if they'll also do a licence exchange option as they did with 64bit XP.

dangel its always been cheaper than OSX, i hate OS's that come out to frequently, you have to set up it, check drivers, make sure its stable...... that takes for ever.

I wounder if there going to license it eopen style, ie, this is only valid for n days.

Isn't OSX retail less than XP PRO tho? Mind you, I suppose taking into account you have to pay for the updates on OSX..

indeed. Look at cost of ownership per year.

Take something like tablet platform, SP2 turned it on its head, and made it by far my favourate pc experiance ever. Quite simply everything i want one not XP SP2 tablet ed gave me.

    free update. Wow.

If that was apple it would of been "cheaper" because the update would of only cost me $99. Thats what i hate. But more to the point any enthusiast who promotes apple should be taken round back and shot anyway, purely because apple are *****, who want to lock everything down so hobbiests/small people can't do squat. MS always help developers, give them lots of support + tools. Hell they sent me embedded C++ 4.0 for free because of some good work i did for the community. Apple would of just sent me an NDA.

The problem with vista pricing, is i would be worried, MS have seen people can't do long term thought (home user people, buisness is already on eOpen) and will be doing the apple $99 a whack job. They will want to lease it to you, this means higher cost of ownership over 3 years. How long have you been running that 2k pro license for? How long that XP pro one? Longer than 18 months?

XP PRO - five years, on multiple systems

Yeah I hate the idea of leasing it - i don't think they need to resort to such a model with such a large marketshare these things are going to fly off the shelves anyway. We'll see tho, ms do get things very wrong sometimes (product activation, geniune advantage programme). I'm perfectly happy with XP PRO as it is now tho i have to say. Does everything i need anyway.

the thing is, as you proved, if your charged $99 3 times as oftne told your getting something 'new' then u go pay it. I mean OSX i played with exensivly before thinking, i'd rather have netBSD for less money + effort, or OpenBSD if i want to seem uber 13.et.

MS want more money, so they will un-doubtly be looking at getting people onto a software rental model.

Hmm, I'm not sure about this move. Obviously the lower price is a good thing, and will probably persuade me to buy Vista earlier, but I'm not sure how beneficial it is to Microsoft. After all, a large amount of their revenue comes from businesses, and they will probably be paying full price for licences at current costs. On the other, some companies are changing to Linux and other cheaper alternatives, so it might be a move to counter that, although I wouldn't think the threat was that big yet.

i hope it'll be as cheap as it says. xp is way way too expensive. i am just about to buy a new pc, and have to spend another £50 for a new xp. not being able to use the same copy on two pcs is stupid. for this reason im gonna give linux a try.

I would think that that will recieve less profit, due to MS getting there large funds from companies rather than a guy building/upgrading his/her. On the other hand it will mean that a lot of people will go for Vista instead of XP on a system build closer to when it arrives.
