QUAKE Mobile? Frag fun for phones!

Quake, arguably one of THE benchmark games in first person shooter history is to make a comeback on the latest generation of 3D enabled phones.

Said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software:
"QUAKE Mobile takes all of the action, game play, and atmosphere of the groundbreaking original and puts it right in the palm of your hands. QUAKE pushes the envelope of today's mobile handsets, and offers gamers a fun and addictive on-the-go entertainment experience. We're already looking forward to the first mobile deathmatch."
QUAKE Mobile is in development by Bare Naked Productions for the new generation of mobile phone handsets which feature dedicated 3D graphics hardware. Bare Naked, (LOVE that name!) claim that QUAKE Mobile will be a faithful conversion of the PC original and offer players all of the action, speed and combat that took the gaming world by storm in 1996.

The first 3D-enabled mobile phones will hit the market this summer, with QUAKE Mobile available as an embedded game on the first of these handsets to be released by a Korean manufacturer in July.

    WOW!

Does this mean in 10 years we will be getting HL2 and Far Cry on our phones! It really puts things in perspective.

    WOW again!

    about time!

the current generation of mobile phones have more than enough grunt to run the quake engine (hell, the GP32 can do it), and since the quake engine is GPL'd, there are already a lot of minimal quake ports available they can build on

possibly, but it was never really intended for use outside korea.

and in this case, i'm using it as an example of something fairly low-spec that can still run quake

I'm wondering if my PDA will run it... it does a fair representation of a Wipe Out clone quite happily... and Quake won't exactly stretch the colour palate... brown, brown... grey, brown...

My 7650 could also play doom, as could my SPV, all of 2 years ago, with quake being a similar spec game, i'd have expected it already, by now I would be hoping we were onto quake 2

The big problem with Quake and the reason a lot of pocket ports are not very good is the fact the engine makes heavy use of floating point calculations. Most mobile devices tend to use ARM based CPU's and they lack a floating point unit so you have to convert all the math to fixed point or lookup tables.

Nobody has really bothered to spend the time doing this for anything more then small parts of the engine. As Bare Naked are doing this as a commericial venture there is a big incentive for them to move the engine over to fixed point and really get something cool onto a phone/PDA. I assume they will be using the Pocket OGL stuff for 3D.

The GP32 port of Quake is far from good, trust me I have worked on it . It may yet get better though.

Ahh, I see, I was going on graphics wise, they always look seeminly similar to me, Wolf3d, Quake and Doom all seem to merge into one where I'm concerned.

I'm still suprised it hasnt been released yet

i was sorta assuming phones had some kind of FPU by now. silly to make assumptions i suppose

i read that it was up to 12ish fps, last i checked, though this could have been false. it's a LONG time since i paid attention to the gp32 scene

David, I could take offence to that . At least you managed to say 'nearly' .

gp32 scummvm was more than good enough last i used it, certainly for playing monkey island 2
