AMD targets new X2 at the mainstream

Today AMD has announced that it is introducing its Athlon 64 X2 3800+ in time for all you folks who will be splashing out on a new CPU this holiday.

Priced at $351 for 1000, AMD consider that the 3800+'s price will mean that "consumers can experience exceptional dual-core performance at a mainstream price point".

AMD continue to push the Athlon 64 FX for gamers rather than the X2, instead pushing the X2 towards "prosumer and digital media segments -- sophisticated power users who run multiple processor-intensive applications simultaneously," which is where the X2 will get the best use anyway.

Read AMD's press release for more info.

    $351 for 1000

End user price is gonna be at least $75 more then that.

I'd rather go with a 2x1MB cache version

sweet... nvm the 1MB cache.. the two logic cores are more than enough to cover the gaps lost in smaller cache..

ITS A 3200+ VENICE REINCARNATED INTO DUAL CORE! I'm already drooling over its potential overclocking head room...

    Wonder If they'll come out with a 3500+ X2? 1.8Ghz x 2?? Dreaming...

*Rides off on his DELL Optiplex GX280 yelling AMEN TO INTEL!*

There's some reviews already. Both Hothardware an The Tech Report were able to overclock it easily to 2.4 GHz.

    komplett.co.uk pricing

uk price on x2 3800+ is £270 for retail inc vat thats still the sort of price that leaves me with me single core 3200+ for a while longer. I was hoping for a sub £250 part but komplett can be expensive so there is stil hope. showing as out of stock though!

overclock.co.uk is also registering £270 inc of VAT.. but its still a pretty good price considering how its able to trash a Pentium D 830

I must say, xtsit looks more attractive every time I look at it. Anyone ordered from them before?

What's scary is that here in France it's actually cheaper to get two 3200+ processors, rather than one 3800+ X2.
AMD must have serious manufacturing problems.

When dual core processors start selling for the same price as a 3200+ venice, I'll consider buying them. The prices may be a little more mainstream now, but it's still a bit too much for a student such as myself. Then again, I guess £250 isn't much more than a week or two's wages (yeah, I know how much food and bills are, I have to pay for a part of that myself) to someone who has a full time job *shrugs*

Just wandering how Pumpman is getting on with his order from XTSIT?

I've never used them either and i'd like to find out how reliable they are.
