Cell loses a core... sometimes

Yield issues with Sony's Cell chip has resulted in only seven of the eight cores functioning on some of the processors. The Inquirer reports:

Sony can guaranty that the seven cores will work, while the other one might work in some cases but the company can not guarantee this.

Sony said that this is due to yield problems but is adamant that the seven cores will work in every case. The company advised developers to bear that in mind when they're getting down and dirty on the development front.

And will Sony test them to see which ones are 8.

Thats ridiculous, you can't go and mass sell a product which gives you a 'higher performance' depending on whether you pick the golden ticket console.

What if only 7 of the cores are used regardless of the state of the 8th, much like graphics cards with possibly dodgy pipelines, that when unlocked turn out to be OK.

Well even so, this is going to work against Sony. Their advertised product will not provide the initial power it promised, unlike the Xbox 360 (in its current development state).

Yep I'm agreed with that. I'm waiting until its actually released until I pass judgement. Hope to see a great next gen of consoles though - looking good so far

Performance in a console wont matter, besides the developers will know what to work with, and within a year will have enough experience and know how to extract most of the power out of it.

Duh, if the console isn't even due out until mid 2006 / early 2007 then of course you won't have seen anything much yet, you only got the first proper look at x360 titles earlier this year, and the console is due out in the next month..

I heard somewere that the PS3 is to be out in November... dunno if its bullsh*t prolly is but if it wasn't it will be put back more...

Unreal Engine 3 Demo not good enough for you?

Hmmmmm Sony console launch - big pinch of salt to be taken with marketing material. Let's not forget the history And if i remember rightly, the above didn't stop Sony showing 'something' at E3 along with Microsoft.
Quite amazing that Sony is cut so much slack compared to the big MS - they're every bit as pervasive, and perhaps twice as evil.
