No more G70 Ultra?

Word has it that NVIDIA won't be releasing a GeForce 7800 Ultra any more. The reason seems to be that they think it would impact upon 7800 GTX sales, and they think they can manage against R520 without it. From The Inquirer:

Will this make ATI more likely to take top spot when R520 surfaces? Possibly, but will there be the stock?

It is always good to take the lead in the high-end-performance graphics race...

...but with competition as strong as it is in this market - you can never be certain to hang on to that lead for long


Launching into a warm summer is never good

Then you add in the fact that enthusiasts 'know' that an Ultra is around the corner

Finally, your closest competitor has their own next-gen products straining at the leash...

...no wonder that the price on the 7800GTX moved from ~ $640 at launch to less than $490 now

Marketeers must be thinking to themselves "What can we do ? What can we change ?"

Well, nature has a knack of rolling summer into autumn and - as the temperatures drop - sales go up - so that is a small positive

ATI's roadmap is not something that they can affect - you just have to sit there and wait for the inevitable slam-dunk

Now that is a stumbling block

If a story came out that it had been 'cancelled' - or maybe was never real - then perhaps it might be possible to boost the sale of 7800 cards

The worrying thing for any competition is that in the latest HEXUS poll, almost 40% of you were waiting to see what the red team deliver before making a choice...

...prudent thinking :)

Interesting isn’t it – ATI and NVIDIA never talk about unannounced products, and who said G70 Ultra was ever on the cards in the first place?

At the end of the day – all we can do is go off the quarterly results – surely? Meaning all companies ‘spin’ things right?

Cards always drop in price from launch to down the line – does this really indicate things? Whats more important to the consumer is availability right?

Lets hope that ATI deliver their high end G70 part in the same volume as NVIDIA did....

I think the HEXUS poll is insightful – consumers will always wait to see what the other team kicks out – even Intel/AMD stuff is the same.

… the only thing which is certain is ATI have delivered nothing yet, right?

All I can see is ATI and NVIDIA are battling this out and it is great for the consumer, lets hope it is the end of paper launches for all :rockon: :rockon: :rockon: :rockon: :rockon:

I am sure that a lot of smaller graphic companies have no problem meeting demand ;)

Come on... I understand what your saying - but AMD (2800 Barton), Intel (An extreme issue once?) have delivered more of the time no paper launches - and it is good to see that NVIDIA started this on the GFX front with the GTX avaliability. I heard the numbers which went to the UK e-tail channel for launch in the first week - and it was impressive.

Both NVIDIA and ATI have been guilty of always doing paper launches :|

Is this the first "Paper Product Drop"?
