Treo on Windows - No Palm OS on a Palm?

Palm yesterday unveiled a new Treo Smartphone, but it'll run Windows rather than Palm OS. It'll be powered by an Intel processor (XScale?) and will probably cost more than current Treos.

I watched this announcement on bloomberg last night with Gates and the palm MD on there too. Lots of questions why such high profile launch to what is NOT that impressive an achievement to be honest.

Big queries about will it do anything to blackberry. But overall the report was sceptical if this was anything more than a marketing exercise....

This is a big coup for Microsoft as Palm's Treo range are synonymous with the word smartphone in the US and outsell all of Microsoft's connected Pocket PC put together.

However, I'd question Palm's judgement here. They're now just one hardware vendor amongst many and the only thing distinguishing themselves from the other Pocket PC makers now is their devices' specs. This isn't good news as Palm's PDAs have traditionally been under-specced compared to their Pocket PC rivals and the announced Windows Treo is actually lowered specced than the Palm OS-powered Treo 650 that's already on the market.

I can see Palm fading away into obscurity, like Psion, now.

Whats happeneds to Pilots OS then? They simply ran out of steam?

nope, palm split itself into 2 companys Palm and Palm Source one made devices the other the OS so Palm went off and made its treo compatible for wm5. It looks an ok device but its square screen device :( oh well nm
