Imagine this - Office online No need to install....

GOOGLE HAS confirmed that it will launch free spreadsheet and word-processing software online and take on Microsoft in one of its biggest markets.

If we're to believe what Google says, then apparently so. Personally, I don't see there being much of a market for online office programs at present.

I think it could be something, its handy.

You do a fresh install, you have no office apps just a dirty broadband connection

What do you do? Search around like a ferret looking for a disk that takes 10 hours to find and 10 minutes to install, reboot or simply, click firefox, go to google as your homepage... and well.. thats about it ?

Useful for people without office, or for students. Would need to see it running though, its a bit of a slap in the face for MS though

Exactly, and it seems a bit of an obvious snub to Microsoft.

i think it is a great idea, but to be honest i don't think it will cost MS too many sales. To me the obvious market for this is home users with cable/dsl or possibly small penny pinching companies. These are people that probably wouldn't go out any buy office anyway, they would pro bably either settle for Works (shudder) or just get a copy for a friend/relative.

So in conclusion, lots of new customers for google, same number for MS.

No money for Google, but less for Microsoft

At least they close the gap

I was expecting a 'Google Browser' to be announced to be honest, I'm quite surprised they've gone for something like this.

Intresting how its taken till post 12 for someone to mention an OS.

How many of you really think a browser is secure? Honestly?

If anyone thinks firefox, ie7, is a burning tribute to security, your plain nuts.

There isn't proper segregation, what i mean by this is say a browser with frames, loading a frame from another site, has too much access and control to other pages.

Same goes with toolbars, and java.

How many times have you found a certain portable document reader, to hang, because the communication between the proccess and the browser's proccess have got confused, hung on something?

When you do something like OLE, you take away the OS's control a bit, your taking onto it, and when you do it in a less secure manner than NT. Its a VERY bad thing.

As such i for one would have to be in a pretty dire situation to use it.

If their working with Sun then it won't surprise me in the least to be honest. The way google are expanding i wouldn't put much past them right now, they seem to have huge potential im my view to be a serious threat to MS providing they have the right support.

This partnership should be a good thing for the consumer, MS needs some proper opposition. Competition between organisations is good in some ways for us buyers.

Firstly, this is hardly a new concept and one which microsoft has been working on for years. Secondly, OpenOffice anyone? The compition is already there and well established.

I can't see Microsoft really being all that worried about this. Many because most money they make from the Office suite comes from business users and no sane IT manger would move from Office to Googl's system. If they were to move it would be to something like open office.

There is no way google could match the power, security, features of the Office suite. I can't see who would really benift from it either. It will probably yet another google effort which is either just a curiosity item or watered down program like Gtalk.

But then maybe i'm wrong, maybe its the next big thing.

EDIT : Seems it was all just rumours after all.
