IT workers dress the worst

Well excuse me! I thought my HEXUSwear was quite alluring!
Short sleeved shirts, man-made fibres and the wrong coloured socks were some of the most common fashion faux-pas cited by corporate stylist, Melanie Moss, who hosted the event on Wednesday night.

"Because the majority of IT people are not in front of customers all the time, they tend to slack off," she said.

Help-desk staff were named as the worst offenders, followed by those working in technology start-ups, many of whom had continued to wear T-shirts to work as a consequence of the casual web culture of the '90s.
[Sunday Morning Herald]

Interestingly the article was posted yesterday, not on Sunday, which is odd given the name of the site. I wonder if it was published in the morning, or evening? ...I'll stop now.
PHP Code:
$s = new signature();
$s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

LOL you seen her suggested style inlaid in that article.

IF that is what she suggests we should wear, well i'll tell her where to stick it heh.

IT industry is such a laid back atmosphere to dress sense for a reason. Its designed to make people feel comfortable in their surroundings, most developers i know wear suits when customers are about, and casual jeans/t-shirt or trousers/shirt most days.

Its what they do their best work in etc.

If I turned up to work in that get up I would be laughed out of the building, needless to say I wear the old shirt and tie when I am in meetings etc but otherwise a pair of cargo pants so I can fill the pockets with everything I need on a job and I am not wearing a 300 quid suit to crawl around ceilings when I am cabling.

ditto
even though a DBA's life doesn't involve that much dirty work I'm not goin to risk a decent pair of trousers on it.

I also have a freeform approch to socks. As long as my feet are covered I'm not fussed

first of all that article made me burst out laughing, I can't believe how deluded Melanie Moss is. She thinks that pictured look is a) suitable for the workplace and b) stylish???? Methinks she has watched 'the anchorman' too many times and taken too much acid...

First day I wore Shirt/'proper' trousers, with shiny black shoes...but no-one dresses like that here ,even are departmental boss wears occasional t-shirts when hes not got meetings all day.

trainers,T-shirt and jeans or chinos if i run out of jeans and cba to do a wash I can even get away with band hoodies/t-shirts without a problem

We are not customer facing, and spend 99% of the day in front of a PC or coffee machine - so it makes sense to wear comfortable clothes Don't want to be sitting there in thin but smart trousers, in shoes without the comfort padding of trainers and a shirt that chokes you to death. Attitudes are so relaxed anyway - the ethos seems to be that as long as the work is done on time (as far as on time goes in IT lol) and you don't take things too far there's alot of freedom. (hence why i can sit here listening to music all day and posting on hexus lol)

where i work, we have a smart dress code.... nothing ott, but shirt/trousers/shoes etc.

on a friday however, casual dress day (as well as pizza day... mmmmm)
i certainly feel a lot easier on friday.
now to change the company policy...

I do find that on the odd day (once in a blue moon) when I can be bothered to dress up for work (read: shirt/tie/jacket), it does get some welcome comments, but like the posts above - I find the novelty wears off and you just end up looking like one of the masses.

Suited-smart isn't mandatory for support staff in my workplace, so respectable tops, black shoes, and black jeans is usually the order of the day...

I feel more relaxed for it..

lol - Sydney Morning Herald

If I have meeting, then yes - suit and tie, or slacks, blazer and groovy shirt.

otherwise either an offensive t-shirt with jeans/shorts or jeans and polo shirt if I know clients may be nosing around.

there's never an excuse for mis-matched socks, and in summer don't wear shoes at all - jandals or tevas instead.

there used to be , then I bought about 15 pairs of identical socks - my socks dont feel they should be bound to a single partner , so they float around as singles.

If iæm going to be in the office for a few days at a time, i usually like to wear trousers (chino type things) and a shirt, never wear a tie though. But if iæm just in for a day to catch up on paperwork then off again i just go in whatever i would normally wear. barely ever have to see clients, but when i do then it's on with the shirt etc.

Have seen me having to go home and change when someone springs a meeting on me. never impressed by that.

I agree - who cares if you still do your job. That is unless your dealing with clients - I find it easier jus to wear suit tie etc every day - saves me thinking in the morning what i have to wear. I'm probably the least colour coordinated guy but who cares in all honesty.....
