    The coming notebook boom?

As one company projects increased laptop sales over the coming year, and probably with more to follow, are we set to see a boom in the number of notebook users?

I thought this was already happening to be honest. Laptops have already become cheaper than whole desktop solutions in some cases, yet they do the job most people use a computer for at least as well as a desktop, with the advantage of portability, low power, and sex appeal

The only real benefit of a desktop system is the user customization and upgradability, and at a guess at least 90% of the PC market don't care for that in the slightest. Desktop PCs were once the domain of the enthusiast only.. I think they will return to be as well.

You can see why. The vast majority of people don't need a kickass PC system, and would much rather have a notebook for word processing, internet stuff, watching dvds, playing music, that sort of thing - nothing at all that needs several GHz of CPU power. It's only really when you're doing something that requires a bit more power or a larger screen, such as playing games, graphics/video/sound editing, that a desktop system is suitable. Personally, if i'm typing, I much prefer to sit back with a notebook on my lap and do it that way.

Yeah I recently bought a laptop and I love it

I still have my desktop for gaming and video editing etc, but I like the fact that I can get an early night and sit in bed with my lappie doing some surfing and an online poker fix before I doze off

It's so convenient it's all wireless too and all my videos and MP3s are stored on my fileserver which all my PCs can access so I can put some sounds on the headphones as I surf, or watch a couple of my cartoons to chill out!

how would you choose between having a sleek, light, sexy laptop (15.4" ws, 2cm thick, etc) but having to have a gaming rig at home, or going for a chunky 17"ws laptop with desktop replacement type stuff like 7800gtx go card...not so nice to carry around though!

I think we also forget - a laptop is a pretty much plug and play computer. They've effectively 'done an apple' in that you take them out of the box, plug them in (not even needed sometimes!) and they're off. Most people on this forum probably take things like plugging in a monitor cable for granted, but I think a lot of people out there would rather not have to do anything like that.

At the moment it still *just* cheaper to get a desktop system. But there's not a lot in it. The cheapest dell desktop you can get is about 330 pounds, and laptop about 100 pounds more.

every now and again there's a Dell offer in the paper, esp the Evening Standard or Metro, for laptop for 350, inclu delivery & VAT

THAT is a steal if only doing office tasks.

me, I want one of them Acer Ferraris Regardless, I need one that is muchos fast and has good graphics - will use it for video editing, compositing and 3D graphics

any recommendations, beyond the aforementioned Acer? Kinda prefer the AMD 64 to the Pentium M chips.......

I'm not talking people that like to work on the move having them. Think bigger, as in homes with PCs opting for a laptop the next time they buy a system...

    Yeah I know.
I know a sizeable chunk of people who have gone..."Oh I want a computer...but Im only going to use it for email...what can i get thats small...Oh laptops look good, I'll get one of those."
They like the fact they have a computer and email, but then can unplug a couple of wires and move it into a cupboard for when they dont want it out.
