Maxell to offer 300GB holographic discs 'late 2006'

The storage specialist will initially offer a removable system based on 300GB media and capable of transfering data at a rate of 20MBps, Maxell said. However, the company said the technology, designed by InPhase Technologies, is capable of achieving 1.6TB per disk - and that's uncompressed capacity - with a 120MBps bandwidth.

At the rate these new technologies are coming out, it might be possible to skip a generation or two, save a bit of money. Who needs blu-ray; with this holographic stuff at 120MBps, I could throw away my harddrives. On the other hand, what if a speck of dust lands on it?

I can't wait till they put this sort of technology into portable music players, so we can hold all our music and films on one device
