The $100 lappy will run Redhat

African OSS news site, Tectonic, is reporting that MIT has finally settled on an OS to run on the MIT/OLPC $100 laptop. Apple had offered its OS, but instead MIT has settled on Red Hat Linux, who are now sponsoring the project.
The lime-green laptop, which uses a 500Mhz AMD processor and has 1GB Flash RAM instead of a hard drive, will only use open source software, despite an offer from Apple for it to use Apple's OS-X operating system for free.

The laptop is still in development, and it is estimated that the screen alone (currently an eight-inch dual colour/black and white SVGA) needs three months more development
    [Tectonic]

Interestingly, the site reports that the laptop is also likely to be commercially available for around $200, so if you ever fancied a wind-up laptop...

Red Hat over OSX, gee can't think why?!

Could it be a crippled with extra junk BSD dosen't run well on low power systems?

I can't help but wounder why they didn't go for a more "mature" distro like debian. All the beareded linux fans seam to like debian, because it moves at a snails pace (good for this project) very strick over licenses (good for this project, no law suite worries).

Oh well this project still excites me, thou with red hat's security herratige (often refered to as "root hat" by wanna be cool kids), it strikes my previous concerne, windows has aged been the brunt of 90% of hacking attempts because 90% of the idoits are using it really rather well. Most security firms (espesually anti-virual) sing its prazes for how well it does. Just think of the problems when the first bug is found with this (esp if its a hardware related one.). I hope they have a seriously good update system (firmware drivers etc) built in. I know i'm sounding like a broken record about this, but mark my words!

That'd be because RedHat are sponsoring the project.
