Battle looms over unified HD TV/PC display connector

The Channel Registry has a report detailing the development by a consortium of computer and consumer electronics firms of a unified display-connector standard called UDI that will compete with VESA's DisplayPort standard.

    DVI + HDMI + HDCP - VGA = UDI

A consortium of computing and consumer electronics companies have come together to create the successor to today's DVI and yesterday's VGA display connectors.

The next-generation connector, dubbed the Unified Display Interface (UDI), will provide compatibility with DVI and the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) currently favoured by HD TVs. The system will also support the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) anti-piracy specification.

However, they've got competition. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has already begun work on DisplayPort, its answer to DVI's successor standard. DisplayPort is set to support both internal and external monitor connections, and can be used with multimedia kit.
    Find out more.

whats the chances of either a card or monitor having both of these on there?

I'm guessing it's quite high, that seems to be the way most things go these days (DVD+-R, BluRay/HD-DVD players - someone has announced this, can't remember who tho)

I think there is a LOT more chance of the two display connector standards coming together or appearing on the same hardware than there is currently of combined Blu-ray/HD-DVD appearing any time soon - there's rather more at stake I reckon.
