One flat panel TV sold every 1.7sec in Britain in week before World Cup

One flat-panel TV set was sold every 1.7 seconds in the UK in the week before the World Cup, according to market-research organisation GfK.

During what GfK calls the "five weeks of the World Cup" (27/05 - 01/07), £337m was splashed out on flat-panel sets, helping to drive growth in consumer electronics by a staggering 30 per cent in June alone.

Page encoding is set to Cyrilic (K018-R) for some reason. changing to Western European (Windows) fixes the £ sign. Using IE6 on Win2K.

Oh yeah, and that sounds like a staggering number of TVs

No such encoding issues here (FireFox and IE6).

Anyone else had the same problem?

As for the number of TV sets sold, yup, it is kind of staggering.
