Ten reasons to buy Vista; five why not to

Michael Desmond, writing for PCWorld.com, has come up with ten reasons why you might want to buy the next version of Windows and five why you might want to stick with what you've got. The piece is based on his hands-on with the Build 5270 beta version of Vista.
    Find out more.

Still, be interesting to see what the final product looks like. Any idea when that will be?

In Microsoft's own write up of Bill Gates' CES keynote speech, the launch date was simply said to be, "later this year" - and I've not seen anything official that puts a firm date on it.

Logically, though, the target has to be the pre-Christmas buying season, and having new PCs on sale with the new OS in good time for that.

So, working back, I'd guesstimate it* has to be no later than September or October - and, typically, it will be a worldwide launch, so the UK would get it that time, too.

    * "it" being the date for CD mastering (Bob later adds, hopefully, in clarification)

You tell us? Maybe point us to an official statement?

My speculation, though (as I hope I have now made clear), is really about when the product has to go for mastering.

If Vista-equipped systems and shrink-wraps of Vista are available on Nov 30, then my dates look reasonable (or maybe a touch early).

But, if I was MS, I absolutely would want Vista to be available on systems and as a shrink-wrap before Nov 30 - cos Nov 30 is little too late for comfort, in my view.
