Data retention laws, whereby ISPs must store telephone and interned communications data for anti-terrorism uses, has lead to Ispa naming the UK its villain of the year. If it wasn't for our government pushing it so hard, EU-wide data retention laws wouldn't be happening. Now ISPs are concerned about the costs and implications of storing and managing such data, and the public is concerned about how it will be used.[BBC News]The trade body said it had chosen the UK for its role in seeking the data retention laws without consider[ing] the impact on net providers and telecoms operators.
A Home Office spokesman told the BBC News website that a lot of work had been done with the industry to address concerns about the measures.
