Where did my YES Box go?

With the YES Box returned to sender () I started to miss it. Luckily, something else turned up:

The sharp-eyed among you will note that it's in the same chassis as the N2100, but the internals are different, as are some of the rear connectors. Indeed, while this is DAS and not NAS, it does have some promise, which will hopefully be realised when I come to test it.

DAS? As in "Das ist gut"?

Sorry. Go on then, what's a DAS? Donkey Attached Storage?

    Directly Attatched Storage?

That sounds a bit like a HD though, lol

    Edit: from google

DAS is storage that is directly connected to a server by connectivity media such as parallel SCSI cables. This direct connection provides fast access to the data; however, storage is only accessible from that server. DAS include the internally attached local disk drives or externally attached RAID (redundant array of independent disks) or JBOD (just a bunch of disks). Although Fibre Channel can be used for direct attached, it is more commonly used in storage area networks.

Yup, Direct Attached Storage, in this case using USB 2.0 or eSATA.

You CAN access it from machines on a network, providing you configure the server correctly. I'm reckoning this will be quicker than Thecus' NAS solutions, which have to support an OS, SMB/FTP/HTTP and RAID software on a fairly slow chip.

Hmmmmmm - I think a NAS would better suit what I need then. I had a google for DAS server which seems to be a completely thing...

Personally, I would love it if all external enclosures started coming with eSATA, even the basic ones. Makes perfect sense IMO. Even the smaller 2.5" enclosures can still use a single USB cable for power...
