    Four opterons in a 1U chassis

    Surely it's impossible? Nope. As the guys at The Register have pointed out, Supermicro, a company reknowned for its OEM server hardware, has engineered a 4-chip Opteron motherboard that'll fit into a 1U chassis.

    Based on the nForce Pro 2200 chipset, the board has dual-core support (so that's 8-way Opterons in a 1U chassis... cheers!) along with support for up to 128GiB of RAM.

    Take a look at the full spec-sheet over at the Supermicro website.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    :O Incredible...

    I'm seriously amazed however, one does wonder about temperatures and its obviously not going to be affordable to the average PC user not that the average PC user would have much use for such an amazing piece of hardware.

    So for me, it will serve very well as a piece of "novelty-ware" BRILLIANT!!

    Dude its in a 1U chassis. Thats designed to be rackmounted. It will be 19" wide, 1.75" tall and very deep. Where would the "average home user" fit it?
    The average PC user doesn't come anywhere near it, let alone come into it.
    It has absolutely nothing, nada - nothing at all to do with the average user. So little that its not worth mentioning.

    point is rackspace tends to get expensive in some situations (say you want a cluster but the room its got to fit in is little more than a broom closet!)

    Something like this will be grand, oh, but don't expect the fans to be anything approaching queit!

    That it is

    TheAnimus - is space is at a premium people might want to consider Blades.
    However any 8 way multiprocessor config in a 1U server is impressive.
    In terms of quietness - I dont think its possible to buy a quiet 1u server.
    I have one in my works office that has to be left on and its doing my nut in. Cant wait till its gone.

    i duno a mate made a virutally silent PIII one for the boot of his car (silent 1u)

    As for blades, 8 opterons in 1u. I recon in 48u you'd get more power using those than blades.

    The one that always gives me a headache is the 1/4rack in the image proccessing lab!

    Intel were saying that its going to be the MIPS and WHATTS per square foot debate by the end of this year.

    But 4 dual-core Opterons at full whack is a different kettle of fish to a silent PIII

    I want that one

    Sounds cool, though for most people they are never going to use such power - at work our dual Xeon servers hardly break a sweat most of the time. Still, give me one and I'm sure Ill find a use for it
