    Vista's PC rating scheme

Will your PC be a 1, or a 3, or maybe even a 5? Microsoft Vista will rate the performance of your PC so that you know how quick it is and how well it can make use of Vista's features.
Computer makers and retailers would then be able to use that as a tool to help explain, in general terms, the capabilities of a particular machine. Software makers would also be able to specify the type of PC needed to run their software.

who remembers "MPC1", "MPC2" and "MPC3"? the same will happen - the numbers will become meaningless as manufacturers bend the truth or outright lie

Just to check... this is all done automatically, so Microsoft can't, to choose a completely random example, say that a certain HP machine is a 2 while the identical Dell machine is a 3?

System requirements are an unwieldy bunch of things that make PCs inaccessible to quite a lot of people.

This scheme will open them up more.

My only fear is that if MS succeeds and this becomes the accepted practise that games/hardware development make be forced to slave to the number scheme. While it can go up infinitely, there's real scope for MS putting the clamps on say what is a 5 and potentially even limiting things through vista as a result of the score, to prevent 'sub-optimal experiences'.

PC development could therefore be controlled by MS and it'd finally slow down and allow the consoles to get ahead.

Highly doubt that'll happen, but it's a worst case senario

What would get to me is if software wouldn't install unless your PC met a certain rating.

I'd format my PC quicker than you could say "oi steve, format your PC"

    same.

If this classification helps less techie-minded people decide on buying a suitable spec machine then great, however I fear like many others that this system could cause install issues and ultimately proove pointless. But lets wait and see...

    Red face Ive Used it....

Dont get too excited guys...I have used it and I can say its not tht great. Using 1.2Gb of RAM and having my CPU Overclocked around 4Ghz I got a "2" Rating...either it was a fluke or the system is pretty flawed. It rates you on things like how much space your HD has...not how fast your HD is. If you get my drift

I got a 4.8 rating with my system on the feb CTP, but I expect the rating to go up when we get the final beta 2 in april (current CTP builds are labled as 'beta 2' but are mostly staged, interim builds)

edit: also you will need a fully DX10 compatable card to get a decent rating here I think, as you need one of those to get the full areo glass experience - but afaik there are no fully DX10 compatable cards out.

I think maybe your 1.2gb RAM is the problem, as I understand it Vista needs 800mb RAM to operate fully. I imagine it's looking for at least 2GB ram to give a decent score.

/Edit - oops post is intended for CoreGamer.
