Norton fluffs up AOL Internet connections

Hot on the heels of a McAfee cockup in which antivirus software falsely detected MS Excel and other apps as viruses, an update to Norton's security software has made it think that AOL's connection process is naughty behavious, thus blocking it.
As a result of the incorrect update, AOL dial-up customers lost their connection and AOL broadband users were unable to access AOL servers, Symantec said. The erroneous update was removed from Symantec's servers about seven hours after it was released, and a corrected version was posted, the company said.

Here in Halls at Uni, there's always problems with Norton. Nearly everyone who needs help with their connection not working in some way or other has Norton installed. Disable Norton Firewall, and the problem goes away (albeit the user then gets flooded with messages from Norton saying it shouldn't be disabled!). Specifically, it seems to like blocking MSN Messenger (on my flatmate's Mac, it prevented access to ANY web service or site that uses SSL encryption), so I'd imagine it has something to do with it not being properly compatible with proxy servers.

Very annoying, wish people would start realising it's a relatively poor security app and there are better alternatives.

So the combination of the two products used by stupid people, when combined, knock them off the internet?

    I don't see a problem here.

I use Norton, purley as we got it free, but clearly it's addressing problems.

The reason people dislike norton so much is because the mathematitions, computer scientists, and thouse who actually know what a computer is were left out of the loop a long time ago now.

Back in '94, if you ran windows 3.1, odds are you'd run norton desktop too, have norton speek disk, norton backup, and many others. They where the best on the market, and blew the standard utils out of the water.

fast forward 10 years and its terrible. So whilst people might say "oh their getting better" its that so many (like myself) detest what happened so much we would never trust semantec

The amount of times we stop peoples problems by removing Norton stuff at work is amazing. We must remove it from peoples PCs at least twice a week!

Ok so they can update Norton to get rid of the problems...with what internet connection exactly?

Admittedly they can Remove it temporarily, but you've gotta admire Symantec and AOL for coming up with such bloated....well ...crap basically
