Dualit kitchen DAB radio 'an instant classic'

Dualit is introducing a DAB radio for the kitchen. The company, best known as a maker of professional toasters and pro-look kitchen appliances for the home, reckons that the DAB/FM unit is, "Destined to become an instant kitchen classic", being "designed to complement other products in the coveted Dualit collection while offering advanced sound quality".

The radio, due May at a VAT-inclusive RRP of £199.95, has a cast aluminium front and rear, plus an aluminium handle - features said to create "a reassuringly solid product with a high-quality feel". Backing this up, the radio, measuring 180(w)x135(h)x27.5(d)mm, weighs a meaty 2.55kg.

It will be offered in three finishes - black, cream and polished aluminium - and available initially from John Lewis.

Hmmm, at over twice the price of a Pure Digital Evoke 1XT, and £50 more than the stereo Evoke 2XT, it'll have to be something rather special...

Hmm... There’s a single 8W speaker in the item. Why is it DAB is supposedly better quality but they only have 1 speaker ?

Surely if its better quality etc then Stereo should be supported ?

You pay the extra because you can pass it off as a fancy, new-fangled ubertoaster. Not sure why you'd want to though...

Well I don't see why people don't just use their free cardboard one.

    Behave!

Of course, although David is having a bit of a laugh here, what is the case is that he very much is a "brands" man with, I know, a Dualit toaster and a whole lot of other possessions that - some would argue - have been bought for the labels they carry rather than because they necessarily offer the best value or the best functionality.

Now, what's actually true in David's case is irrelevant but what does need to be borne in mind is that a LOT of people do buy by brand (closer to home, think Apple, think Sony, etc) and so a product such as this radio from Dualit is likely to have an instant set of would-be purchasers from a subset of the people who always buy Dualit-branded kitchen appliances.

I like the look of this, but not for £200 as Kempez said.

My parents have a black Pure Evoke 1 with the optional second speaker. Having the second speaker plugged in makes a huge difference to the sound of this thing. Well work the extra in my opinion.

As far as kitchen appliances are concerned, i prefer Kitchen Aid to Dualit

I have an EVOKE 1 at the moment which I use in my office, I have no brand "loyalty" in my kitchen - but I like good things - and most of the brands in the kitchen are due to the reliability associated with them.

my missus buys only siemens kit for our kitchen . . . . . with preference to the porsche designed stuff like toaster, kettle, juicer, coffee machine etc but I still dont see the IT angle on this radio, or the relevance for it being on hexus.. .. .. .. .. ..

Hexus is more than IT these days. There is a very large audio/video following on the forums. That is Bob's area too
