    NTL to takeover Virgin Mobile

As part of the deal, NTL will license the Virgin Mobile brand for thirty years, paying £8.5m a year at a minimum for the priviledge. Shareholders in Virgin Mobile will be able to sell their shares at 372p a pop, acquire NTL shares, or a combination of the two. The deal will see Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group as the largest shareholder of the new entity.

according to the BBC this should be a nice rival to Sky. I hope so. And i hope the merger with Telewest will also make NTL get off their friggin' backsides and complete the half a mile or so to my area. Wed SO buy into the package of tv/phone/net. (mmm 10Mbit)

I think competition is always a good thing for Sky.

Not that I'm hugely keen on NTL: but Sky full package + HD = £55p/m and HD box is: £299.....we could do with those prices falling

It can if it's NTL that's doing the buying. Whilst competition is a good thing and a rival to SKY is ideal I cannot see anyway that NTL can compete with SKY. Whilst SKY's customer service isn't the best in the world you can usually get through to a bod and they will do something to help. Previous experiences with NTL have left everyone I know pulling their teeth and hair out. I would rather not have internet access if NTL was the only way I could get it. I am surprised that this company is still in existence, but then again it just shows how much crap the average British consumer will put up with when they don't understand the technology or know of an alternative.

Maybe some good will come out of it because Mr Branson knows all about customer service and how to build a succesful brand. Lets hope some of that rubs off on NTL.

NTL are much better than they used to be. I've had rock solid internet and phone performance from them for the last few years. The Telewest merger has been coming for ages; tbh a consolidation of the myriad cable networks was always going to come and is more than likely a good thing. We're told that the cable network is better suited to on-demnad and interactive services than Sky, now is our chance to find out. It seems to me that a venture into mobile phones is a natural next step (although they tried it with Orange a while ago IIRC).

Well I must say, I do like teleport (the telewest on demand) It works a treat and pausing the ep's etc. Renting a film for a full 24 hours! pausing whenever you like fast forwarding rewinding.. Hell they ought to patent it before someone else does (ala blockbuster and their rental service and those other guys).
I just really really like my telewest service and im scared of NTL bending it over. If they promote growth however none of this.. well the cables right at the end of the street.. or its right at the end of your path but we cant supply you.. im all for it. More revenue usually equals better service in the long run (if they use it right).

Homechoice have been onto it for years

They tried to market a while back, but it was just too crazy and advanced for our little minds

So they reinvented the brand more recently.

Might this mean there will be mobile deals for existing NTL customers? Or will it be the typical 'for new customers only'?
