Philips TV-advert enforcer - you're not going to like this!

In his intiguing New Scientist patents column, veteran technology journo Barry Fox reveals that Philips could make itself VERY unpopular with TV viewers by its invention of a television advert enforcer that prevents people changing channels or fast-forwarding recordings when the adverts come on!
Sounds like a great idea to us. Cough!

Find out more in this HEXUS.headline (it's worse than you'd imagine) and let us know here quite how keenly YOU await this new innovation.

They gonna employ bouncers too, so I can't leave the room?
They may as well just keep going until they FORCE me to buy the products...

The general concensus of this on the MythTV developers forums is that this isn't as bad as it sounds, and could actually benefit viewers that use opensource PVR devices.

Because it is a patent by a comercial organisation and not a proposed requirement by the FCC (like the broadcast flag was) no-onw HAS to support this. If you want to, they you licence its use from IBM.

It isn't clear from what i've read if the license will be sold to broadcasters and given away to hardware manufacturers or the other way round. If it's the former then there isn't a lot IBM can do if your equipment just decides to ignore the flag embeded in the video stream. An up side of this however is your PVR can tell exactly when the commercial starts and mark it for later skipping.

BTW, this is already very possible with digital TV that has interactive services on it, such as Freeview and SkyDigital. Instead of pointing the chanel LCN to a video/audio stream, you point it at an MHEG stream. This MHEG stream then opens the appropriate video stream, just like BBC parlament. PVRs would then either have to be very clever and be able to filter the overriding MHEG or would record it along with the video stream and be at the mercy of the MHEG on playback.

Personally, i just can't see this taking off, not in hte UK at least

only way this could help is if it was sold as a way to charge more for old TVs, ie buy this 32" for £2,000 we'll be out of stock by next month, and then you have to watch adverts, but the tv will only cost £1,000 mwahahahaahaha!

to be honest, i actually think its a GOOD thing..

with tivo and so on, more and more people are going to be watching delayed recordings rather than live - making fast forwarding easier. however, if only 10% of people watch adverts, the tv companies have to put 10 times as many ads on in order to pay for the programming - or else start using product placement in shows. if everyone was forced to watch all the ads, there would be less adverts, and thus a smoother viewing experiance..

Sounds marvellous to me - the volume is right, production values are great, there's comedy, pathos and tragedy all rounded into neat short bites. Now if only they could do something to make the programme breaks shorter

    Hmmm...

Phillips TV's if this is released will mean enforced adverts while all the other "makers" sets without this technology mean we can change channels when we want to.

No Prizes for guessing who's sales are going to drop quicker than Ronaldo in the penalty area

I wonder if advertising companies are going to pay phillips for integrating this technology to ensure they get more views of their stupid adverts.

    Less adverts?

You're living in a dream world mate. If TV companies are able to broadcast as many adverts as they can, they're not going to throw away those adverts just because they're making more money. They won't think "ahh, we're making enough, we don't need to make as much, let's annoy the viewers less".

Things are bad enough with Ads the last thing we want is to be prevented from switching out of annoying Ads.That idea can go to hell.Stop taking away our freedom by forcing us to watch annoying Ads
