TDK promises printable Blu-ray Disc blanks - but not until Q3, 2006

At this week's NAB 2006 show, TDK is promising to introduce inkjet printable single-layer and dual-layer write-once Blu-ray Disc blanks - though not until the third quarter of 2006.

Discs are said to be coated all the way to their centre hubs with a special inkjet-optimized material that delivers "extremely bright, high-resolution full-color images and text" and also "prevents warping", something that's reckoned to be a potential problem with other inkjet coatings.

In a statement that, hopefully, won't come back to haunt him, Bruce Youmans, the company's VP of marketing, said that the discs, composed of "TDK's exclusive recording materials, copper and silicon, deliver remarkable, long-lasting performance", adding, "we see many applications that will benefit immensely from long life and massive data capacity".
