No, it is not a belated April Fools.
Our man in the know tells us that dabs.com has now been acquired by British Telecom.
Couldn't care less, nonplussed?
Whaddya think?

I've always like Dabs as a retailer, even from the days that there were called Dabhand Computing and sold 5.25" floppy disk drives for the BBC Model B. I've lost count of the stuff that I've bought from them over the years. Never had a single problem.
I just hope that it doesn't change too much under BT's ownership, or if it is does change, it becomes even better.
I don't think its necessarily an unusual move. BT need new markets since all their old telephony ones have been eroding for years. I guess that there are only so many times that they can say there have been delays in local loop unbundling because the local engineer is off sickMedia content delivery perhaps? Another outlet for delivering new services? A new channel for commercial visibility?

WTF? Why on earth would BT want to move into this area? We use Dabs a lot, and I'm hoping that the source of this has misunderstood or something.
Never really used them since i discovered Scan and Dabs overhauled their website, a few years back, it used to be easy to use, then it wasn't and never has been since.
I agree this doesn't sound quite right. I thought BT was concentrating on core businesses, and component retail certainally isn't a core function.
Eww, lets hope not, everyone I know with BT is dissatisfied with the service. Especially if they are using them as a ISP provider.
it's confirmed - RNS story at 9:00:08. (RNS is the regulatory wire of the LSE, so it's about as authoritarian a source as you can get...)
"BT announced today it has acquired dabs.com plc, one of the UK's leading
internet retailers of IT and technology products.
The move is part of BT's strategy to strengthen its online sales and service
capabilities, particularly for small and medium-sized business and consumer
products.
To complement Dabs' broad base of IT and technology products, BT will offer its
full range of products and support services online - enhancing its position as a
leading retailer of converged IT and communications products and services."
seperate sources report a px tag of around £30Mln (unconfirmed)
The interesting question is what will happen to the BT sales website. Granted their range wasn't great but the staff were always extra helpful and the discounted offers excellent.
Well then... the oddness is in fact real.. hum.
David Atherton must have made a few quid from this deal....
Not a bad return for a company that started out as small mail order business with B&W magazine ads in the 80s.
noooo - I was hoping that Newegg were going to buy DABS :-(
I guess that rumour was just (DA) BS ;-p

I don't mind Dabs because generally a lot of specialist stuff people ask me to buy I only appear to be able to get from there, compared to places like Micro Direct, Aria and Scan etc... (although they're usually a bit more expensive)
Yep - it's all over the place now

What kind of specialist stuff? I'm sure there will be somewhere else you can get if from if BT mess up dabs, lol...Originally Posted by Mike Fishcake
